1. 2020년대의 테크네

뇌와 컴퓨터를 연결하는 기술(BCI)을 개발하는 싱크론(Synchron)社는 2021년 8월 미국 식품의약국(FDA)으로부터 뇌 인터페이스 임플란트인 '스탠트로드'(Stentrode)에 대한 인간 대상 임상 실험 승인을 받았다. 이후 2023년 5월에는 테슬라 최고경영자(CEO) 일론 머스크가 설립한 스타트업 뉴럴링크(Neuralink)도 인간 대상 임상 실험 허가를 받으면서 뇌-컴퓨터 연결 기술 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다. 싱크론사의 스탠드로드는 뇌혈관에 이식되어 뇌의 운동 명령을 전기 신호로 변환해 전송하고, 수신기가 마비된 신체의 끊어진 신경을 대신해 운동 명령을 전달하고 움직일 수 있도록 한다. 최근의 뇌-컴퓨터 연결 기술은 초보적 단계로 뇌 또는 신경계의 장애를 가진 중증 환자나 사지 마비 등을 겪고 있는 사람들을 대상으로 실제로 적용되고 있으며, 일상적 소통이나 기본적인 사지의 움직임 개선에 대한 안전성과 유효성 평가가 진행되고 있다.

2. 감각성형 세계관Ⅰ

나는 미래사회의 의·공학 기술의 하나로 ‘감각성형(Hyper Sense Sergery)’이라는 인간의 감각을 전자적으로 업그레이드하는 기술이 2030년경 이후 실제로 출현할 것이라고 예견한다.

감각성형은 현재의 인간 신체의 표피적이거나 외과적 성형의술이 진화되고, A·I 와 로봇공학 의 발전과 더불어 메타휴먼 개념, 마블 히어로를 롤 모델로 한 인간증강(Augmented Human)이론 등이 구체화되기 위한 파생개념이며, 감각성형 세계관은 < 감각성형 >이라는 제목의 영상 작품을 제작하기 시작한 2018년부터 구상되었다.

감각성형 세계관은 최근 인공지능과 연관된 기술들의 발전과 더불어 미래의 암울한 분위기를 이르는 사이버펑크 개념을 기반으로 하고 있는데, 작품들에서 크게 두 가지 시기를 주축으로 묘사된다. 2020년대 말 인공지능 프로그램들과 조우한 기술들이 검증되지 않은 상태에서 인간들에게 < 감각성형 >이 음성적으로 시술되는 시기와 2030년대가 되면서 이른바 < 감각성형 >이 공식적 의료시술로서 공인되어 글로벌 대기업들에 의해 합법적으로 시술되는 시기로 구분 된다. 전자의 시기를 전제로 한 작품들은 감각성형-음감성형을 자가 시술한 언더그라운드 가수 P씨에게서 감각성형-리듬감성형을 음성적으로 시술받는 드러머 김기무 씨의 시술 상황을 묘사한 단채널 비디오 작품 < 감각성형, 2019 >와 시술 후 증강된 리듬감을 바탕으로 개인 인터넷 방송으로 감각성형 시술사실을 커밍아웃하는 내용의 < 감각성형, 2022 >와 < 어느 가수의 자연어 해킹, 2023 >이 있다. 이 세 작품은 뮤지엄 원에서 기획한 전시 < 상실의 징후들 >展에서 2023~2024년에 소개 되었다. 2020년대는 인공지능이 급속도로 발달하는 시기로 관측되는데, 이러한 분위기는 인공지능에게 지배당할 염려가 있는 미래 인간의 위상을 증강시키기 위한 기술도 동반 발전할 것임을 추측케 한다. 실제로 뉴럴링크社의 일론 머스크는 뇌에 컴퓨터 칩을 이식하는 기술이 일차적으로는 장애인들의 질환 극복이지만, 나아가 인공지능의 인간 지배에 대한 저항적 목표가 있음을 분명히 하고 있다. 이와는 별도로 인공지능 기술을 접목한 예술작품을 구상하는 작가들이 의공학 분야에서 생각지 못하는 의외의 기능을 탑재한 인간상에 대한 몽상을 가지면서 가공해 낼 결과물들은 분명히 현재의 인간을 메타 존재로서 기계와 인간의 조합형으로 왜곡·가공 시킨 이미지로 묘사되어 나타날 것이다. 이때까지만 하더라도 기계와 인간의 조합은 단순히 이미지로만 부각되나 어느 지하 작업실 한 곳에서는 누군가 몰래, 실제 인간과 기계의 브리콜라주 실험을 하고 있을 수도 있다. 따라서, 2020년대 말까지의 기류는 필히 사이버 펑크가 르네상스를 맞는 시기가 될 것이다.

3. 감각성형 세계관Ⅱ

인간을 대상으로 한 A·I 접목기술에 대한 실험 규제가 서서히 풀리기 시작하는 과도기로서 2020년대를 거쳐 2030년대가 되면서, 감각성형은 가상의 글로벌 기업 ‘Net-Tural’社에 의해 공인 의료행위로서 시술되는 상황으로 묘사된다. < 감각성형-시술자 인터뷰, 2024 >에서는 감각성형 시술팀장 ‘제이드 안’이 2020년대 말 감각성형을 음성적으로 시술 받았던 드러머 김기무를 대상으로 업그레이드 된 공식적 리듬감 성형을 시술받는 과정을 나레이션 한다.

< 감각성형-시술자 인터뷰, 2024 >에서 소개되는 리듬감 성형은 실제로 A·I 개발에 있어서 자연어 처리(인간이 사용하는 자연어를 컴퓨터가 이해하고 처리할 수 있도록 하는 기술)의 기본적 절차인 한국어 형태소 분석에 대한 자의적 해석으로 제시된다. 최근까지 형태소 분석 기술은 말뭉치 구분에 대한 프롬프트 처리나 코딩과정을 거쳐야 되나, < 감각성형-시술자 인터뷰, 2024 >에서는 코딩과정이 사라진 진보한 기술로 언어적 형태소를 이미지 형태소로 처리하며, 이들의 조합 정보를 리듬감을 증강시키는 데이터로 뇌에 다운로드 가능한 것으로 설명한다. 특히, 감각성형을 시술할 때 실행하는 가상프로그램 구동 모니터링에 해당하는 작품 < 인터페이스 감각성형, 2024 >에서 이러한 과정이 잘 드러난다. 가령, 어떤 곡(작품상에서는 내가-이른바 부케인 DJ. Keegeeoh로서-작곡한 헤비메탈 연주곡 ‘곡성’을 예로 든다.)의 드럼 파트 사운드 조합을 인지가 편한 상태의 모종의 데이터로 바꾸기 위해 셋 드럼의 각 파트별 사운드를 한글 한 음절의 소리 값으로 디지털화한 이미지로 나타내며, 드럼 파트 연주 구간에서 이들의 조합(셋 드럼은 여러 개의 드럼과 심벌즈로 구성되고, 양팔과 양손으로 연주하므로 최대 4개의 동시음이 발생된다. 따라서, 한글 음절의 조합은 4개 까지 겹쳐질 수 있고, 한 박자를 한 개의 정 사각형을 채우는 한 글자로 이미지화 했을 때, 반 박자는 글자를 기울여 정사각형의 절반 공간을 차지하도록 하는 등의 글자 디자인이 디스플레이 된다. 또한 겹침 음의 경우 배음을 흐리게 처리하여 투명도가 다른 글자들의 배치로 보여 지는 구간도 있다.)은 곡 재생 시 동시에 디스플레이 되는 오디오비주얼 데이터이지만, 이 작품의 시청은 재생되는 곡의 드럼 파트 데이터를 다운로드 받는 과정에 대응된다. 요컨대, 이 곡의 드럼 파트 한글 소리값 데이터를 뇌에 다운로드 받는 것으로, 김기무의 리듬감 성형이 이루어지는 것이다.

나는 < 감각성형-시술자 인터뷰, 2024 >나 < 인터페이스 감각성형, 2024 >를 통해 악보를 한글 소리 음절로 다시 적어 이해하는 김기무*(실제로는 나의 처지를 김기무가 대신 연기하였다.)의 개인적 연주행위의 습관을 토대로 한 맞춤형 처방으로서 감각성형을 소개하고 있다. 이런 점은 미래 기술발달의 방향성이 인간증강 시술들이 개인마다 다른 감각과 정보인지의 습관특성에 따라 다른 처방을 채택하는 ‘퍼스널 케어’형으로 발전할 것이라고 타진하는 것이기도 하다.

4. 감각성형의 기대와 우려

감각의 문제를 다루기 위해서는 외부 현상에 대한 인간 개인이 인지하는 감각상태가 상대적이라는 점이 전제되어야 한다. 즉. 개인은 한 국가의 국민으로서 소속된 나라의 언어를 공식적으로 배워 사용한다. 현재의 인공지능 분야에서 자연어 처리는 국가별 언어 처리에 머무는 수준이다. 그러나 미래의 감각성형은 자연어 처리를 개인 언어 처리 수준으로 발전시킬 것이다. 감각성형이 시술되려면 감각기관과 신경계, 뇌와 사지 말단의 연동 작용에서 처리되는 언어적 정보가 개인마다 다르다는 전제가 필요하고 실제로 그렇기 때문에 이러한 추측은 합리적이다. 즉, 개인마다 다른 감각 데이터를 추출하고, 그 데이터의 습성을 정보화하며 가속화하는 테크놀로지가 감각성형이 될 것이며, 감각성형이 실제화 된다면 수십·수백억 가지의 메타언어가 생성될 수도 있다.

감각성형은 나는 누구인가라는 질문에서 시작하여, 나를 잘 알기 위한 과정이자 나를 증강시키기 위한 미래적 자기 발전 시스템이다. 여러 패턴의 감각성형 데이터가 누적될수록 인간증강이 실천될 것이지만, 이런 현상은 결국 기술 발달이 초래하는 과잉 정보화의 임계점을 어디로 설정할 것인가에 대한 문제에 고민하는데 도달하게끔 한다. 가령, 이 시술은 수월한 커뮤니케이션의 단계를 넘어 초과된 감각정보를 남용하는 단계에 진입하는 기술로 응용할 수 도 있다. 반복적 감각성형을 통해 신과 같은 초감각을 지닌 누군가가 주위에 돌아다닌다는 가정이나 감각성형 용병들이 전쟁을 하는 상상을 해보자. 당신은 감각성형을 과연 승인해야 할 기술인지에 대한 물음에 어떻게 대답하겠는가? 그럼에도 불구하고 감각성형을 받겠냐는 질문에는 어떻게 대답하겠는가? 감각성형에 거는 기대와 우려가 많음에도 불구하고, 결국 감각성형은 여러 다른 이름으로 가까운 미래에 공개될 것임이 자명하다.

THE OUTLOOK OF HYPER SENSE SURGERY

1. Techne of 2020s

Synchron, a company that develops technology to connect the brain and computer (BCI), received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2021 to conduct human clinical trials for 'Stentrode', a brain interface implant. In May 2023, Neuralink, a startup founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, received approval for clinical trials on humans in May 2023. This event is accelerating the development of brain-computer connection technology.

Synchron's stantrod is implanted in the cerebral blood vessels. It converts the brain's motor command into electrical signals and transmit them. Additionally, it helps the disconnected nerves of the paralyzed body to be transmitted motor command and being able to be mobile the body.

Human computer interface (The latest brain-computer connection technology) is at a rudimentary level and is being applied to seriously illed-patients with brain or nervous system disorders or people suffering from quadriplegia. This technology is being evaluated for safety and effectiveness in improving daily communication and basic limb movements.

2. Hyper Sense outlookⅠ

I foresee a technology that electronically upgrades human senses called ‘Hyper Sense Surgery’ actually emerged after 2030s. It will be widespread-used medical and engineering technologies of 2030s society.

Current epidermolytic surgery or surgical surgery has become evolved dramatically. It is a derivative concept to embody the meta-human concept and the augmented human theory using Marvel heroes as role models. These derived concepts have actualized ‘Hyper Sense Surgery’.

The worldview of Hyper sense surgery was conceived in 2018 when I began producing a video work titled .

The outlook of ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ is based on the concept of cyberpunk, which is inspired by the gloomy atmosphere of the future along with the recent development of technologies related to artificial intelligence, A.I.

The art works has two main stream to be portrayed. Firstly, at the end of the 2020s, a time when is performed negatively on humans while the technologies encountered with artificial intelligence programs are not verified. Secondly, in the 2030s, so-called ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ was recognized as an official medical procedure and was legally performed by large global companies.

Works based on the premise of the former period include the single-channel video work , which depicts the medical procedure of drummer Kim Ki-moo, who undergoes hyper sense surgery-rhythm sense surgery illegally. The rhythm sense is being drawn from Mr. P’s brain. And there are , , which Coming out about the fact of hyper sense surgery through a personal Internet broadcast while playing music based on the enhanced sense of rhythm after the procedure.

These three works are introduced in 2023-2024 in the exhibition at Museum One*.

In 2020s, an artificial intelligence has been developing itself rapidly. At the same time, in this atmosphere, it can be speculated that technologies to enhance the status of future humans who are at risk of being dominated by artificial intelligence will also develop.

Practically, Neuralink's Elon Musk makes it clear that although the technology to implant computer chips into the brain is primarily to overcome diseases of the disabled, it also has the goal of resisting artificial intelligence's domination of humans.

Separately, artists who design works of art incorporating artificial intelligence technology have daydreams about human figures equipped with unexpected functions that cannot be imagined in the field of biomedical engineering. The results to be processed will clearly depict current humans as meta-existence , distorted and processed into a combination of machines and humans.

Until now, the combination of machines and humans has only been highlighted as only an image. In an underground studio, someone might have been secretly experimenting with the bricolage of real humans and machines. Therefore, the trend until the end of the 2020s can inevitably be defined as a time when cyberpunk meets a renaissance.

3. Outlook of Hyper Sense Surgery Ⅱ

In a transition period through 2020 to 2030, in which restrictions on experiments on A.I. technologies targeting humans are slowly beginning to be lifted, ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ is put an action, finally. The procedure is performed as a certified medical practice by the virtual global company ‘Net-Tural’.

In , Jade Ahn, head of the Hyper sense surgery team, narrates the process of receiving upgraded formal rhythm surgery for drummer Kim Ki-moo, who had uncertified hyper sense surgery in the late 2020s. Rhythm sense surgery, introduced in , is presented as an arbitrary interpretation of analysis of Korean morpheme. It is a basic procedure of natural language processing which is technology that allows computers to understand and process natural language used by humans

Lately, morpheme analysis technology required prompt processing or a coding process for corpus classification. However in < Hyper Sense Surgery - Interview with the operator, 2024 >, linguistic morphemes are processed into image morphemes with an advanced technology that eliminates the coding process. And then, this combined information is explained as data that enhances the sense of rhythm and can be downloaded to the brain.

In particular, this process is clearly revealed in the work , which corresponds to the monitoring of the virtual program running when performing hyper sense surgery.

Assuming that a certain song(in the work, I use the heavy metal instrumental song ‘Gokseong’ composed by myself- as the so-called DJ Keegeeoh, another persona)’s drum sound combination turns into some kind of data that is easy to recognize. The sound of each part of the set drum is represented as a digitized image with the sound value of one syllable in Korean.

The combination of these during the drum part performance section (a set drum is made up of several drums and cymbals, and is played with both arms and both hands, so up to four simultaneous sounds can be heard. I introduce a ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ as a customized prescription based on personal performance habits of Kim Ki-moo* (actually, Kim Ki-moo acted my situation). In the art work or , Kim-Ki-moo* rewrites Korean syllables to understand music sheets.

This point also suggests that the direction of future technological development will be that human augmentation procedures will develop into a ‘personal care’ type. The personal care can adopt different prescriptions according to the habits of each individual’s different senses and information perception.

4. Concerns and Expectations of Hyper sense surgery

In order to deal with the matter of sense or sensory function, it must be assumed that the sensory state that a human individual perceives about external phenomena is relative. In other words, as a citizen of a country, an individual officially learns and uses the language of the country he or she belongs to. In the current fields of artificial intelligence, natural language processing is limited to country-specific language processing.

However, future ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ will advance natural language processing to the level of personal language processing. In order for hyper sense surgery to be performed, it is necessary to assume the fact that the linguistic information could be different from each others due to capability of processing the information through the linkage between the sense organs, the nervous system, the brain, and the extremities of the limbs. Each individual extracts different sensory data, which can be informationized and accelerated to become ‘Hyper Sense surgery technology’. If ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ happens in real life, there will be tens of billions of metalanguages created. The concept of ‘Hyper Sense surgery’ started as a question of ‘Who I am’. It has been a process to get to know myself. It is a futuristic self-development system to enhance my personal self-power. Despite the concerns about hyper sense surgery, it is clear that hyper sense surgery will ultimately be released under several different names in the near future.

김지오는 기술적 통찰력과 반항적인 생활태도를 가진 사람들이 사이버시대의 저항문화를 표출하는 주제를 다루는 총체예술가이자 개념미술가로서의 작품제작을 지향한다. 이러한 그의 태도는 2000년부터 개인적 차원의 시각언어를 창출하는데서 시작해 그러한 시각언어와 현상들 간의 가상적이고도 논리적인 연관관계를 회화, 애니메이션, 그 외의 멀티미디어로 연출해 내는데서 확인된다. 한편 김지오는 그가 생산해 내는 수천가지 형태소들의 범주에 한국어나 외국어의 의성어로서의 짤막한 글자나 단어 등을 자신의 형태소로 귀속시켜, 그것들의 조합으로 모종의 비공식적 언어체계를 구현해 내는 실험을 지속하였다. 또한 이런 이면으로서 그는 고교시절부터 드럼 플레이에 대한 관심을 가지고 있었으나 악보를 읽지 못하는 자신의 처지를 극복하고자 2008년부터 드럼의 파트별 사운드를 한글 소리값으로 대응시키고, 이 소리값의 조합을 통해 드럼악보를 생성시키는 일련의 작업을 해오고 있는 것이기도 하다. 드럼 세트의 각 파트별 소리를 한글표기로 그린 회화이자 사적인 드럼악보인 2008년작 < 보기쉬운 악보 >는 한글이 디지코드이면서도 매우 직관적인 감각데이터임을 시사하는 작업의 시발점에 있는데, 이번 전시는 연계선상에 있는 전시로서 한글 소리값 악보가 만들어지고 기호체계로서 사용되는 과정을 유희적 놀이로 제시하려 한다.

전시의 전반적 작품들은 드럼 세트의 파트별 한글 소리값이 각인된 유사 마작놀이인 < 악보를 읽지 못하는 사람을 위한 리듬생성 놀이세트 >의 사용법과 이 놀이를 통해 우연적으로 조합된 한글 소리값 악보의 구성, 또한 그 악보에 따른 연주를 실제로 수행하는 일련의 장면들을 보여준다.

< 악보를 읽지 못하는 사람을 위한 리듬생성 놀이세트 >는 실물 설치작품으로 재현되기도 하며, 디지털 프린팅 이미지인 2019년작 < 매뉴얼 >에서는 해당 마작알 놀이 세트를 플레이하는 순서를 열거한 사진 설명서이며, < 직관적 악보 >는 놀이 수행자가 고른 128개의 마작알들을 마작판 위에 배치시킨 일례이다. 또한, < 네박자 맞춤 >은 < 직관적 리듬 >에서 선택된 마작알들을 16개-네박자, 네마디로 재배열한 이미지이다. 1채널 비디오 < 알레아토릭 >*에 등장하는 드러머는 악보를 읽지 못하는 작가-김지오를 대신해 연기한다. 연기자는 셋드럼의 파트별 한글 소리값이 새겨져 있는 이른바 < 악보를 읽지 못하는 사람을 위한 리듬생성 놀이세트 >를 들고 공연장에 등장한다. 그는 놀이세트를 열어 소리값 패들과 배열패드를 펼쳐놓는다.

연기자는 소리값 패를 하나씩 뒤집어 순서대로 패드에 배치하여 우연적이고도 즉흥적인 드럼악보를 만든다. 연기자는 무대 위에서 종이에 옮겨 적은 한글 소리값 드럼악보를 보고 드럼연주를 실행한다.

이 전시를 통해 김지오는 개인마다 자신의 감각에 편리하게 대응하는 시각언어를 가공할 수 있다는 사실을 드러내고자 한다. 김지오의 경우는 드럼의 사운드를 분절적 데이터인 한글 음절과 매칭시킨 예이며, 한글 소리값은 공식적인 악보의 음표와 쉼표보다 이해하기 쉬운 공감각적 언어가 된다.

*알레아토릭(Aleatorik)이란, 미술·음악 따위의 예술 작품을 창작할 때 우연성이나 즉흥성을 도입하는 일을 일컫는다. 볼프강 아마데우스 모차르트가 주사위를 던져 16개 마디를 조합하여 미뉴에트를 작곡하는 방식이 이에 해당한다.

매체교란감성 - SOUND SCAPE

매체교란감성-SOUNDSCAPE 는 벡터 이미지를 드로잉하는 플로터에 진동센서를 부착시켜 동시적 사운드가 발생되는 개념의 기계간 인터랙티브 작품이다. 부연컨데, 캔버스 위에서 특정 이미지를 소스로 반복적 으로 그려나가는 드로잉머신은 장착된 펜에 의해 캔버스 표면을 접촉했다가 떼기를 수행한다. 캔버스 표면에 펜이 닿아 이미지를 그리기 시작하는 시점은 캔버스 후면에 부착되어 있는 진동 센서에 스위칭 신호로서 전달된다. 이 신호는 다시 앰프와 스피커를 통해 특정 사운드를 출력하는 데이터가 된다. 다시말해, 본 작업에서는 어떤 사물에서 벌어지는 상황을 다른 사물이 작동하기 위한 정보로 끌어다쓰는 방식의 상호작용이 벌어지며, 이때 시각적 상황은 청신호를 생성시키는 감각데이터로서 매체교란과 간섭의 장면이 연출되는 것이다. 이 작업은 이른바 매체-사물 간의 데이터 공유와 반응이 실시간으로 이루어지는 사물인터넷의 원리를 공감각적 브리콜라주로 표현하였다.

‘매체교란감성-SOUNDSCAPE’는 기존의 이미지가 주는 감각정보로서의 시각데이터를 청각적 사운드 데이터로 치환시키고자 하는 의도로 제작하게 되었다. 캔버스에 그려지는 이미지는 흔히 우리가 접하는 ‘그림’으로, 캔버스 표면에서 선과 색, 형태와 구도 등의 시감각 요소들과 그것에 대응하는 상징적 의미들을 담고 있는 상황으로 연출된다. 그러나 이러한 시감각적 요소들은 다른

매체들과 연합되면서, 음환경-사운드스케이프의 지표(index)가 될 수 있다. 즉, 그림은 시감각적 요소일 뿐만 아니라 어떠한 소리를 출력해내는 근원으로서의 소스라 할 수 있다. 이번 작업에서는 침몰하는 ‘세월호’가 그려지는 동안 바닷속 물체의 탐지나 표정(標定)에 사용되는 음향표정장치(音響標定裝置)인 ‘소나(Sonar)’ 기기의 탐지음향을 동시적으로 출력해 내도록 하였다. 이러한

음환경으로서의 소나 탐지음은 2014년 세월호 침몰 사건의 실재적 원인이 여전히 미궁의 바다 속에서 가라앉아 표류하고 있음을 은유하는 것이다.

3년만에 인양된 세월호는 인양될 때 이미 많은 것을 바닷속에 남겨놓은 체로 부식된 모습을 드러내었는데, 미쳐 빠져나오지 못한 세월호 탑승객들의 잔해와 정체와 용도가 불분명한 선적물, 그리고 침몰이후에도 이사건이 대형참사로 남을 밖에 없었던 의혹들은 여전히 수중에서 탐지된다는 것을 표상한다. 즉. 침몰 당시의 이미지 재현과 동시에 재생되는 즉물적 탐지음의 대응은 비장한 음환경을 조성함으로써, 관객들로 하여금 세월호 사건이 아직도 명쾌하게 매듭지어지지 못한 환각이자 환청적 실재라는 것을 새삼 각인시킨다.

통각체계를 거쳐 지각한 대상과 현상들이 어떤 경로에서 인지적 메카니즘을 통해 정보화하고 소통되는지에 대한 연구들이 의학과 과학기술의 분야에서 활발히 진행 중이다. 하지만, 물리적 측면의 실험과 유추와 데이터를 통해 단편적 결론에 도달하고 여전히 난제를 남긴 채 또 다른 숙제를 남기는 현실이다. 인간의 변화들이 뇌의 기능을 통한 신경망의 작용인지, 아니면 그 이전에 발생학적 관점에서 마치 우리가 감지할 수 없는 진화적 측면으로 스토밍되는(미끄러지는) 생태적 운명인지 인간 의지의 작용인지 구분할 수 없는 무수의 관계망과 결과가 형성되어 현재 커뮤니케이션의 메카닉컬 그라운드를 만들었는지 정확히 구분하긴 어렵다.그것은 두뇌에 관한 연구가 여전히 진행 중이고 현재도 새로운 결과와 가설이 부딪치는 난해한 영역이기 때문이다.때론 인류문명의 프로그래밍이 단순히 지금 시간이 아닌 그 이전부터 반복되어 왔다고 주장하고 인간 두뇌의 생태적, 초자연적 모듈레이터적 기능에 주목하는 시각을 제시하기도 한다.아무튼 중요한 지점은 인간이 살아가는 환경과 그것이 인공적이든 자연적이든 간에 주어진 조건들로부터 늘 전향성을 유지하고 급속도로 변화를 겪고 있는 상태에서 현재의 네트웍이어떤 방향으로 흘러갈 것인가에 대한 문제들이다.

기계의 문명과 전기의 문명 디지털 문명을 바탕으로 급속히 변화되는 디지털 네트웍환경에 인류는 놓여 있고 우리의 지각과 인식체계가 인공적 환경과 밀접해지는 현장에 서있다.아날로그와 디지털의 관계에서 결국 디지털의 취약은 물성의 불안정에 치명적이고 아날로그의 맹신은 휴먼 스케일-즉 관습적 감각과 소통체계에 대한 한계적 답습-으로부터 자유롭지 못하고, 진취적이지 못했던 양자간의 대립이 끝날 무렵 무진장한 스킬로 무장한 네트웍의 진화는 이런 고민들을 일면 증발시켜 버린 듯 보여진다.그리고 그것들은 무진장의 이미지와 속도로 인간 주체를 모듈화시키고 다른 곳으로 이행한다. 판단과 피드백은 자취를 감추고 있다.

김창언의 Language Garden-知覺變動은 이런 문제들에 대한 도해적 관점을 드러내는 방법에서 좀 더 본질적이고 원초적인 관점을 설정한다. 마치, 설명적 태도로 설계도를 이해시키듯이 감각의 수용상태와 기호적 관계가 정보로써 데이터 베이스화 하는 과정을 시각적 실체화함으로 추상석, 형이상적 굴레에서 벗어나 시각적 실체성을 제시한다.물론, 이점을 이해하기에 선행되고 주지해야 할 관점은 몸의 경험과 우리가 느끼는 언어, 시각, 청각의 범위에서 얻어지는 파장의 범위, 때로는 데이터의 관점을 벗어나 직관적 영역을 넓게 설정하고, 연상하고, 감각적으로 이해하려는 선행이 필요하다.현대의 디지털 네트웍킹의 정보적 파급과 함께 유기적 진화를 넘어 체계를 강화하고 보완하면서 빠른 속도로 변화- 진화라고 단정하기엔 잠재태적 부정성이 있을 수 있기에- 하고 있지만 그 환경의 수혜자들의 실재 생활세계에서 변화되는 인간의 미래에 대해 낙관과 비관조차 하기 어려운 급속한 네트웍의 하이브리드적 변화는, 지각체계의 본질과 무관하게 답습적으로 생산되어진다.김창언의 작업들은 이런 문제들에 대해 휴먼 스케일적 관점에서 보정성을 꾸준히 연구해 온 시지각 이미지 연구자다.단순히 현재 문명의 세례를 받는 입장에서 시각이미지와 네트웍을 소비하는 주체가 아닌 능동적으로 그 전향성의 속성을 분석하고 나아가 어떤 시각으로 생산하고 보정할 것인가를 시각 이미지를 통해 주해적으로 풀어냄으로써 소통매개와 소통환경에 대해 미래적 반경을 제시하고 있다.그의 작업에서 주목해야 할 부분은 언어적 영역, 비언어적 직관을 받아들이는 청각과 뇌를 기반으로 새로운 시지각적 언어모델을 상징과 기호로 제시하고 있는 실험성에 있다.이 부분이 중요한 이유는 현재 진행되거나 연동되어 분파되는 버츄얼이미지의 생성과정에 대한 도상적 이미지, 혹은 입체적 작업을 통해 설명하고 그것을 탈 언어적 영역에서 김창언의 방식대로 분석함으로 뉴미디어와 네트웍의 총합적 반경에서 매우 학술적이고 예술적인 제안점을 제시함에 있다.흔히, 우리는 변화하는 현대의 중심점에 시각적 감각을 우선 전제하고 디스플레이적 관점으로 언어 이미지와 문자 이미지를 상용하고 소비하고 있다.

하지만 이런 관점에서 본다면 시각이미지와 문자적 구조, 언어적 네러티브는 결국 속도와 환경의 변화에 따라 새로운 상징과 기호체계로 대체될 수 있다고 가정할 수 있겠다.문제는 이런 환경이 도래하면 통합적 감각에 대해 선택된 시각적 표준화가 역사와 가치를 거세하고 억압적으로 자리잡음으로 인지적 기능과 지각적인 개인의 판단과 사고는 협소해질 것이고 문명예고자들의 낙관론과는 별개로 비관적 관점으로 유추해야 할 시점이 분명 올 수 있다고 가정한다.그리고 과거의 문맹자처럼 난독성을 가진 버츄얼이미지들에 대한 부적응성도 상존하리라 본다.기본적으로 김창언의 버츄얼 이미지를 통한 데이터베이스 구축은 통각적 인지성을 기반으로 한 연구다. 인간의 소통성과 교류에 관한 관점을 청각적 인지의 반경에서 출발하여 일단은시지각으로 구현된다. 그것들은 미래의 생활세계 반경에서 테크니컬, 메커니컬 그라운드와 조우을 통해 시스테마틱한 체계로 이행되기 전단계의 원시적 설계도라 이해된다.소노그래피(Sonography)를 바탕으로 시각이미지 반경에서 신호, 신호체계, 음향적 요소, 언어를 통틀어 형태소를 모델을 창안하고 그것을 데이터베이스화한 결과를 다시 평면, 입체로 표현(?)하는 그의 작업을 현재 시점에서 단순히 미술적 반경에서 이해하기엔 잠재적 영역이 넓고 여전히 그는 통각적 지각체계와 잠재적 소통언어를 연구하는 경도에 있다.여행자들이 들고 다니던 호리병에 정령이 신의 메시지를 알려주리라던 믿음을 가졌던 중세시대로부터 오랜 시간이 지난 현대에서 우리는 평면적 단말기를 들고 네트웍의 정령들과 소통을 시도한다.

하지만 이런 과도기 이후에 더 빠르고 축약된 체계가 인간의 생활사와 소통의 매개들을 어떤 형태와 메커니즘으로 분화되고 다시 통합될지는 예측하기 어렵다.그러한 현재 시점에서 언어적 형식이 아닌 비언어적 직관을 바탕으로 소통하는데 필요한 미래적 제안으로써 그의 시각이미지연구는, 네트웍의 단순한 상징과 기호 체계에서 벗어나 이후에 도래할 속도와 지각적 사고의 공간으로 이행하는 전단계적 실험이다.레오나르도 다빈치는 인체와 비행을 연구했고 이후로 인간은 그 꿈을 실현했고 현재도 인간신체의 의식과 의식의 비행을 위해 다양한 지각의 소통와 언어를 연구하는 다빈치형 연구자들이 세계 곳곳에서 생태와 형태학을 바탕으로 다음 시대의 소통을 실험하고 있다.김창언의 개별적 모형들은 통각지각을 바탕으로 현재 소통형식들이 축약적인 비언어적 형태의 이미지로 소통되는 먼 미래의 생활세계를 예측하고 준비하기 위한 과정에서, 역설적으로 신체의 감각영역과 휴먼스케일이 억압당하고 네트웍의 테크놀로지란 권력이 강요하는 탈지각적인 모듈레이터적 인간형에 대한 합리적 거부를 제안한다.

즉, 데이터 베이스가 구축되기 전 단계의 착안과 그 과정에서 순치되는 일련의 메커니컬 그라운드를 시각이미지로 환원시키면서 감각의 복원과 상상과 연상의 묘미를 파고드는 즐거움을 통해서 현실적으로 우리에게 주어진 감각의 호기심에 주목하길 바라고 있음이다.인류 역사에서 바퀴의 출현과 인쇄술, 동력의 발전, 소리의 저장과 통신, 디지털의 출현과 현재 구축된 인간 생활세계가 상대적 시간에서 인류 역사에서 아주 짧은 기간이라고 본다면 김창언이 연구하는 소통의 매개로써 실험되는 이미지들은 후에 우리 생활사에 어떤 모습으로 테크놀로지의 옷을 입고 다가올지 아무도 모를 일이다.역발상이지만...상형문자를 만들었던 시기의 사람들이 김창언의 작업을 조우한다면 그들은 그것을 읽어낼지 사뭇 궁금해진다.High Technology의 미디어에 대한 비유는 이미 동굴 안에서 있었다. 김창언의 작업에서 먼 훗날의 시간을 캐어보길 권하고 싶다.

In the fields of medical science and scientific technology, experts have been actively studying about which routes perceived objects and phenomenons are informationized and communicated through cognitive mechanism from system of apperception. However, they face the reality that there are many obstacles while studying these subjects because they have only concluded the study in a fragmentary way by means of using experiments of physical aspect, analogy, and data.Whether changes of civilization are affected by a nerve network of brain or these are ecological destiny that has stormed in a evolutional approach that we can not perceive. Or even it can be an effect of free will of human. We can not separate which one is right answer since there have been numerous network systems and results from them. So we can not decide if it is right to think that those network systems made mechanical ground of communication, nowadays.It is because studies of human brain has still been going on and there are too many different results that conflicts together with new hypothesis.Some experts say that programming of civilization of mankind is not simply a time of present but is a repetition of pattern from the past and they even suggest people to have a sight of focusing on supernaturally modulating functions and ecological functions of human brain.

Anyway, the most important point is that we always keep our conversion from the allowed conditions whether it is artificial or natural with surroundings that human being lives. Additionally, it is important to note that we should conceive the problems of not knowing that which way networks today would go in this high speed change.We, as human being, are laid in a environment of digital network that transforms on the ground of civilized digital time period. We are also standing where has been closely attached into artificial environment with our sense and system of perception.Compared to characteristics of analog, fragility of digital network is fatal for people that there is unstability of hardware. Furthermore, blind faith of analog is not free from 'Human Scale'(conventional sense ability and the limited imitation of communication system).As conflict between digital and analog has been completed, it is likely that the conflict has disappeared due to the fact of the evolution of network. Besides, all these happening has made people modularized with numberless images and extremely high speed, people have been settled in a different space of realm.Chang-Eun, Kim's new exhibition, Language Garden-知覺變動, tries to set up a more essential and basic point of view while illustrating when it comes to solving these problems. It is like making people understand by using a blueprint. In further approach of this concept, sensory receptor cell's condition and each symbol's relation is used for information while visualizing the process of database.

As a result, Chang-Eun, Kim's works of art of 'Language Garden' suggest visual substance that is free itself from restraints of abstraction and metaphysical expression.To understand this explanation, you should previously consider linguistic viewpoint and the spectrum of wavelength that you see or feel visually and auditorily. Sometimes you should be away from judging by data from somewhere else, and you must find your own intuition, study it carefully, and understand sensately.Today, digital networking has had enormous power of influence. As time has gone by, it has evolved organically like a living-being.(Evolved: it can be misunderstood because there would be a virtual paradigmatic negativity) It enhanced the power of its own system and also supplemented by itself. It is difficult to decide whether human being has a optimistic future or a negative future while facing the digital world. This hybrid rapidly changing network has been imitated. It had no relative aspects of essential of knowledge system.Chang-Eun, Kim is truly a investigator who has been studying visual perception continuously to solve these problems in a human scale way.He is suggesting people not only to consume the visual image and network but also to analyze when to change directions spontaneously. Moreover, he presents how to produce and revise the digital image and what kind of point of view you should take. He uses visual images to create the explanation of each potential words. Therefore, he suggests future world of communicational intermediation and environment.Take a good look at his new series of art work. He freely creates symbols and signs. They are a new visual linguistic models based on hearing sense and brain.(Hearing sense; consists of sphere of linguistic and nonverbal)Nowadays, there are tons of studies of processes of production of virtual images. However, Chang-Eun, Kim succeeded to have an iconological interpretation and three-dimensional works. He finally had a notion that the processes of production of virtual images are not in linguistic field. Considering all these problems of new media and network, he has suggested these new ideas in a scholarly and an artistic way.Generally speaking, we put an emphasis on optical signals in digital era so we commonly keep consuming verbal images(hearing) and linguistic images(seeing). Therefore, we can substitute visual image, language structure, and verbal narrative with a new symbol system and sign during the time of digital environment that keeps transforming.If new digital world comes, selected visual standardization of integral senses will destroy history and human dignity and will settle aggressively. Additionally, perceptive function and person's decision and thinking will become narrower.

At last, there will be a time that we should think negatively about this world.(separated opinion from civilization futurists who only have optimism)And people will have difficulties about virtual images. They will not be about to understand the meaning of each signs. It is almost like an illiterate in past time.Chang-Eun, Kim's study of virtual images is based on apperceptive perception. People's intercommunication is realized by visual perception from the hearing organs. This visualizing process can be understood as a primitive blueprint which is a prior stage(phase) of systematic world through technical, mechanical ground in future world.Based on Sonography, he has created a model of morpheme which contains its system of sign, an element of sound, and language. As a result, he was able to database the outcomes into flat surface, and also three-dimensional structure. His works of art is not quite understandable simply in genre of art. Potentially, Chang-Eun Kim's sphere of art is broader than just 'Art'. He has an ability to study consciousness apperceptively and, furthermore, has had a conclusion of having potential communication language for human being in the future.In the Middle Ages, people had a superstition that there was a message from God in side of the gourd bottles carried by travellers. Many times later, in digital era, people carry smart phones, try to communicate each other with invisible networks called ‘wi-fi'. Some of those designs proved a success. Now there are many artists, designers, and other experts who are like Leonar´do da Vin´ci. They are studying various kinds of perceiving communication skills and languages in order to acknowledging human body and human behaviour(especially shifting the stream of consciousness). They are experimenting the next communication skills based on ecology and morphology around the world. And Chang-Eun, Kim is one of them.His individual models are abbreviated, non-verbal communication tool images. They are created apperceptively. He tries to predict the future life style and help people to prepare for the future. Paradoxically he insists to refuse a deviated perceptive(탈지각) modulated human behaviour. Human beings now are suppressed human senses and human scale by digital network technology.We must notice about the prior step of building data base in an analog way. In the step of noticing, tractable mechanical ground is revivified into visual image. Restoration of senses, imagination, an association of ideas penetrate directly our heart and soul and it enlightens our soul. Realistically speaking, he puts an emphasis on human senses that is felt and understood it fully.In human history, dramatic changes have been occurred such as invention of wheel and printing technique, energy development, sound recording technique, appearance of digital age. If you consider that human beings has lived in earth in a very short period of time, Chang-Eun, Kim's works of art will become in our daily lives and people will interact each other with these iconic images. We can not imagine how it is going to be applied in our society. It is worth thinking about it thoroughly for our future generations.If people who used hieroglyphics back in thousands of years ago met Chang-Eun Kim, they would have understood his way of expressive language of digital world. They might have communicated through images because there were metaphoric icons about hi-tech media carved on the wall of the cave back in the days.Now I firmly suggest to imagine and visualize future time through Kim Chang-Eun's masterpieces.

타임키퍼(Timekeeper)란 ‘기록 스포츠에서 경기시간을 재는 사람’ 혹은 ‘출퇴근 시간 기록부를 관리하는 사람’을 뜻한다. 다른 한편으로는 음악 밴드의 멤버 중 ‘드러머’를 지칭하기도 하여 콘서트 중에 멤버소개를 할 때 ‘드러머’라는 말 대신 ‘그레이트 타임키퍼(Great Time Keeper)’ 라는 애칭으로 부르기도 한다. 즉, 타임키퍼란 시간-박자-리듬을 관장하는 사람이다.‘음악적 현상을 그리는 것’은 김창언의 오랜 관심사이다. 김창언은 피아노를 치는 사람을 구상적으로 그리기보다는 음악적 현상의 기호화된 체계를 고안하는데 흥미가 있다. 그는 일상의 사물들에서 들리는 사운드에 민감하고, 그 사운드를 연상시키는 이미지를 생각해낸다. 가령 소리의 길이가 2차원 공간에서 얼마만큼의 지면으로서의 공간을 차지하는지 추산해 보는 것과 같은 것이다.‘How to make a sign?’과 ‘아리랑 스크립트’는 이러한 물음에서 그려진 작품들로, ‘How to make a sign?’ 에서 박스 테이프의 길이는 ‘찌익’ 하는 테이프 접착시의 소리의 길이를 연상시키는 지표적 기호이다. 또, ‘아리랑 스크립트’에서는 1박자를 정방형의 사각공간으로 치환하고, 그 정방형들이 연결꺽쇠로 이어진 선형공간이라 할 때, ‘아리랑’의 첫 소절의 1박자와 반 박자들의 리듬을 공간 패턴으로 그려낸 작품이다.이즈음에서 김창언이 가지는 ‘리듬’이라는 음악적 현상에 시각언어 연구자로서 그가 취하는 전방위적 태도에 주목할 필요가 있다.

기실 로잘린드 크라우스(Rosalind Krauss)가 “리듬이란 단순히 음악적 현상이 아닌 회화에서도 역동성을 나타내는 가장 원초적인 요소”라고 말한 바 있는 것처럼 ‘리듬’이 회화의 근원적 문제라 하더라도 김창언은 그것에 대한 매우 실험적 입장을 취하고 있다. 흔히 ‘리듬’의 회화적 표현이란 선과 면, 색의 구성을 통한 화면 배치상의 ‘리듬’을 그려내는 작업을 생각할 수 있으나, 김창언은 그보다 ‘소리’ 혹은 ‘리듬’을 찾을 수 있는 오브제를 그리거나 만들고, ‘리듬’의 현상을 관람자들이 찾아내거나, 그가 제시한 ‘리듬’ 표기법의 기호화 논리를 공유하도록 하는 데 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 이러한 점은 김창언이 타임키퍼로서 봉사하던 시절부터 지금까지 악보를 살펴볼 수 없는 난독증에 기인하기도 하겠으나, 태생적으로 지닌 시간쪼개기 혹은 박자 맞추기와 일상의 물건들 간의 연관짖기놀이(작업)가 구체음악적으로 연장되고 있음을 보여주는 것이기도 하다.특정한 행위를 수반하며 소리를 내는 반복 작동형 브리콜라주(bricolage)들에서 ‘리듬’에 대한 김창언의 전방위적 기호화의 논리를 발견할 수 있다.

‘헤드뱅잉 머신’과 ‘타임키퍼’는 브리콜라주와 회화작품으로 전시된다. 회화작품인 ‘헤드뱅잉 머신’과 ‘타임키퍼’는 그들이 수행하는 ‘리듬’ 행위 구현을 시각기호로 그려낸 코드화의 도해이며, 로보틱스 브리콜라주인 ‘헤드뱅잉 머신’은 드러머가 정확한 박자를 맞추기 위해 고개짓인 헤드뱅잉을 하면서 스트로킹을 하는 전신 행위를 축약형으로 재현한 설치작품이다. 그래서 헤드뱅잉 머신은 고개짓이 드러밍이 되어 베이스 드럼을 연주하게 된다. 같은 공간에 설치된 타임키퍼는 어딘가에서 들리는 음악소리에 발바닥으로 땅을 치는 작가(혹은 우리)의 무의식적 행위를 작가(우리)대신 반복한다. 이 두 가지 브리콜라주가 동시에 발산해내는 사운드는 규칙적인 리듬이거나 다소 불규칙적인 엇박자들의 구간이며, 파편적인 라임들의 연속이라 하겠다. 이런 상황을 맞이한 관람자들은 또 다른 패턴의 리듬을 부가할 수 있는 밴드의 일원으로서 타임키퍼가 될 수 있는 것이다. 누군가는 비트박스나 가사 없는 멜로디를 흥얼거리기도 할 것이며, 타임키퍼를 따라 발을 구를 수도 있을 것이다. 즉흥적인 임프로비제이션을 관람자들이 스스로 늘어놓도록 하는 것이 김창언이 관람자들과 소통하는 남다른 방법이며, 더불어 그는 자신이 전시장에 설정해 놓은 상황이 아니더라도 일상에서도 관람자들이 즉흥적 타임키퍼가 되기를 갈망한다.

한편, 김창언은 우리의 환경이 풍요로운 소리의 저장고라는 점을 주지해야 한다고 말한다. 현대인들은 오만 물건들이 토해내는 소음들의 공해에 시달린다. 이런 점을 이유로 듣기 좋은 음악파일들만을 휴대기기에 저장해 귓속형 이어폰으로 들으며 다닌다. 그러나 김창언은 이러한 행위는 자신의 감각을 고립시키는 행위로 무한한 정보를 가진 외부환경의 소리와는 단절하고 mp3와 같은 대역이 좁은 사운드에 길들여지는 것이므로 경계해야 한다고 언급한다. 그는 이러한 현대인들에게 주변의 소음을 리드미컬한 음악적 풍요로 즐기기를 제안한다. 자신을 둘러싼 사물들과 환경에서 들리는 잡음들은 잡음이 아닌 비트박스의 짧막한 소스들이며, 그것을 어떻게 이어 붙이고, 믹싱할지를 생각해보는 것이 비로소 소음 공해에서 벗어나는 지혜라고 말이다.

The Timekeeper means 'a person in charge of timing a race at a game of records' or 'a person in charge of controlling the time sheet'. On the other hand, it refers to 'a drummer' of a music band, who is sometimes introduced as his nickname Great Time Keeper, instead of 'drummer'. In short, the Timekeeper is a person who takes charge of time-beat-rhythm.'Portraying a musical phenomenon' has been a long-time concern of Kim, Ian. Kim has more interest in devising a symbolized system of the musical phenomena, instead of drawing a piano player concretely. He is very sensitive to the sound from the objects in our daily living, and hits upon images that reflect the sound. For instance, it seems like estimating how much space the length of the sound can take in a two-dimensional space. 'How to make a sign?' and 'Arirang Script' were born based on this question. In the work 'How to make a sign?', the length of a box tape is an indexical sign that reminds us of the length of the 'creeking sound'‘, made when the tape is being attached. In 'Arirang Script', one beat is replaced with a square dead space, and those squares are supposed to be linear space that are linked with clamp connections, and in this way, rhythms of one and a half beats on the first bar of 'Arirang Script' are transformed into a spatial pattern.In this point of time, we have to focus our concern on the omnidirectional attitude Kim takes, on the musical phenomena of his rhythm, as a visual language researcher.

In fact, as Rosalind Krauss said, "rhythm is not merely a musical phenomenon but a primitive factor that represents dynamics in painting", 'rhythm' can be regarded from a basic issue in painting, but Kim takes very experimental attitude on it. Often, a pictorial expression of 'rhythm' may be regarded as portraying 'rhythm' on the screen placement through composition of lines, planes, and colors. Rather Kim draws or creates objects from which 'sound' or 'rhythm' are found, focusing on sharing his symbolized logics of the 'rhythm' notation through viewers' finding the phenomena of the 'rhythm' or his offering.Kim's omnidirectional, symbolized logics on 'rhythms' can be found from the repetitively operated bricolages that make sound with specific actions. 'Headbanging machine' and 'Timekeeper' are exhibited as bricolage and painting. As paintings, both art works are illustrations of coded paintings in which the 'rhythm' actions are embodied in a form of visual signs.

As a robotics bricolage work, 'headbanging machine' is an installation work in a miniatured size that reproduces the full body action of stroking while a drummer's headbanging to beat time.So the shake of the head of the Headbanging Machine can beat the base drum. The Time Keeper at the same space, repeats an automatic action of an artist (or all of us) to beat time on the floor to the sound from somewhere. The sound that is created by the two bricolages at the same time is a section of regular rhythms or irregular beats that are varied from the written music, and a continuity of fragmentary rhymes. Viewers who are faced in this setting can be time keepers as members of a band who are entitled to offer their own pattern of rhythm.Some may be beat-boxing or humming a few lines of melody with no words, or some others may beat time with their feet. Kim invites viewers to create spontaneous improvisation of their own initiatives, which is Kim's way of communication with viewers. In addition, Kim earnestly wants viewers to become spontaneous time keeper in their daily living, beyond the established setting at the exhibition.Besides, Kim has reminded us that our surrounding environment is a storage of a plenty of sound. These days, people are afflicted with noise pollution transmitted from all kinds of objects.

For this reason, they deliver their favorable music files and listen to them from a mobile device through the earphone. Kim warns that this kind of action may cause our senses to be isolated, by discontinuing the sound from the external environment that include infinite information, and being accustomed to narrow band sound from the mp3. He suggests that we enjoy surrounding noise as musical abundance. Mixed sounds from objects in our surroundings and environment, are not noise but brief source of beat box, and what we have to do now to get out of the noise pollution is to bend our mind to how to piece or mix them together.

바흐는 한 옥타브의 음을 정확히 12개로 분할하여 이웃하는 음들의 간격을 똑같이 만들고자 하였다. 평균율이라 불리는 바흐의 발명 덕택에 어떤 곡이든 완벽한 조바꿈이 가능해졌다. 또한 작곡가가 머릿속에 떠올린 악상을 악보로 기록하면 작곡가의 연주자가 악보만을 보고도 작곡가의 머릿속에 있던 음을 그대로 재생할 수 있게 되었다. 이는 음악에서 악보의 절대적인 권위를 의미하는 것이기도 하다. 악보로 나타낼 수 없는 음은 마치 모든 소리가 언어로 간주될 수 없듯이 음으로 간주될 수 없기 때문이다. 그러나 이러한 악보의 절대적인 권위는 한편으로는 오선지에 나타낼 수 없는 무수히 많은 음들을 소음으로 추방시키는 폭력을 의미하기도 한 것이다.이런 맥락에서 보자면 난독증은 한편 미덕이기도 하다. 미국의 초창기 흑인 음악가들이 악보에 얽매이지 않는 즉흥연주(임프로비제이션)를 발달시킬 수 있었던 것도 오선지 악보를 읽는 능력이 없었기 때문이다. 세상의 모든 사물을 언어가 아닌 언어 이전의 사물 자체로 대할 때 풍부한 이미지로 마주칠 수 있는 것처럼, 세상의 소리를 악보에 담긴 기호가 아닌 하나의 이미지로 대할 때 풍부한 소음이 아닌 우리의 감정을 자극하는 하나의 소리 현상이 될 수 있다. 이런 점에서 김창언의 ‘난독증’은 언어의 세계를 넘어서 세상과 소통하고자 하는 진지한 반란이다. 작가의 ‘난독증’은 세상과의 단절이 아닌 세상과의 새로운 소통방식을 의미하기 때문이다.난독증은 작가의 개인적인 체험에서 나온 것이기도 하다. 자신의 고백에서 알 수 있듯이, 작가는 드럼 악보를 읽지 못한 채 수년 간 드럼을 연주한 경험이 있다. 그에게 음악은 읽는 어떤 것이 아닌 몸으로 느끼고 발산하는 어떤 것이었기 때문에 악보를 못 읽는 난독증은 자연스러운 결과였다. 하지만 동시에 난독증은 고도의 기교와 기계적 엄밀함의 벽에 부딪치게 된다. 이는 작가 개인의 역설이기도 하지만, 어쩌면 예술 자체가 지닌 역설을 보여주는 것이기도 하다.이 역설은 드럼이라는 리듬 악기 자체가 기존의 오선지 악보와는 맞지 않는 특성을 지니고 있는 데서 명확하게 드러난다. 여러 개의 북(킥 드럼, 스내어, 탐탐 등)과 심벌(하이햇, 라이더, 차이나 심벌 등)로 이루어진 드럼은 높낮이가 존재하지 않고 강약과 같은 강도의 차이만 존재한다. 그런데 매우 역설적이게도 드럼 악보는 음의 높낮이를 나타내는 오선지 악보로 되어 있다. 음높이가 없는 타악기를 음높이로 기록하는 것은 역설적이지 않을 수 없다. 타악기는 몸으로 느끼는 리듬을 나타낸다. 따라서 드럼 악보에 대한 난독증은 어쩌면 이러한 역설을 드러내는 자연스러운 반응일 지도 모른다.여기서 많은 사람들이 이러한 의구심을 가질 수도 있다. “왜 미술작업을 하는 작가가 이토록 음악, 그것도 리듬에 집착하는 것일까?” 이는 당연한 의문일 수 있지만, 바로 이 의문 자체가 작가의 작업을 풀어나가는 열쇠이기도 하다. 이 질문은 “미술가인 작가가 음악적 현상인 리듬에 집착하는 이유는 그것이 음악의 근본임과 동시에 회화의 근본이기 때문은 아닐까?”라는 가정으로 바꿀 수도 있을 것이다. 리듬이 회화와 무관한 단지 음악적 현상이라면 화가인 작가의 관심은 그저 하나의 호기심에 불과한 것으로 남을 것이다. 그러나 리듬에 대한 작가의 집착은 그 집착이 단지 호기심이나 개인적 취향의 산물이 아닌 회화의 근본적인 탐구에서 비롯된 것임을 알게 된다.음악의 출발은 선율(멜로디)이나 화음이 아니다. 음악은 리듬에서 출발한다. 빗방울 소리는 특정한 선율이 없으며, 더군다나 화음은 생각할 수조차 없다. 그저 사소하게 스치는 빗방울 소리가 어느 순간 우리의 귀에 음악처럼 들린다면 그것은 빗소리의 리듬 때문이다. 각각의 빗방울 소리의 강도가 어떤 패턴을 띠고 우리의 귀를 자극하는 순간 빗소리는 음악이 된다. 이 패턴이 다름 아닌 리듬이다. 이 빗방울 소리가 단순한 소음이 아닌 우리의 마음을 움직이는 음악이 되는 것은 바로 이 리듬의 패턴 때문이다. 그러나 기존의 오선지 악보는 음정과 음의 길이를 통해서 선율과 화음을 나타낼 뿐 리듬을 나타낼 수는 없다. 악보의 권력이 강해질수록 음악에서 리듬은 퇴보할 수밖에 없다.리듬은 소리의 생명력인 셈이며 역동성이다. 로잘린드 크라우스에 따르면 리듬감은 단순히 음악적인 현상이 아닌 회화에서도 역동성을 나타내는 가장 원초적인 요소이다. 리듬이란 일종의 강약과 세기(비트, beat)라고 할 수 있는데, 회화에서 역동성과 생명력을 불러일으키는 것은 바로 이미지의 리듬감이다. 단순한 보색의 대비, 수평선과 수직선의 대비가 아닌 강약의 흐름과 율동감이야말로 우리의 심장을 뛰게 만든다. 말하자면 회화에서 이러한 비트야말로 우리의 맥박(pulse)을 움직이는 원초적인 생명력인 것이다.작가의 탐험은 바로 회화의 원초적인 생명력을 만들어내는, 즉 리듬을 발생시키는 이미지의 기호들을 탐색하는 작업으로 일관하고 있다. ‘난독증’을 테마로 한 현 시기의 작업들 이전인 2000년부터 작가는 리듬을 불러일으키는 세상의 기호들을 수집하고 그것을 표현하여 왔다. 가령 물건들이 임의로 올려진 선반에서 리듬의 기호를 추출한다든지, 자동차 머플러, 공구, 갑옷 입은 기사 등 일상의 오브제에서 리듬의 기호를 추출하고자 하는 것은 그의 이러한 일관된 작업의 한 단면인 셈이다. 세상의 모든 사물이나 시각적인 현상은 그것이 언어 이전에 어떤 리듬을 지니고 있다. 작가는 언어의 기호가 아닌 생명력을 주는 사물의 원초적인 형태를 ‘형태소’라고 부르는데, 이러한 형태소는 곧 음악적인 리듬과도 일맥상통하는 것이다. Image Block', ‘시각적 방언’, ‘시장의 언어’ 등 ‘난독증 시리즈’ 이전의 작업들은 바로 이러한 형태소를 찾아내는 탐구의 과정이었다.이제 ‘난독증’ 시리즈는 바로 작가가 이미지의 생명력을 찾아나서는 일련의 작업여정 속에서 또 다른 국면에 들어섰음을 보여준다. 이 시리즈에서 그는 단순히 세상에 존재하는 오브제들의 형태소를 찾는 것을 넘어서 그것을 구문론(syntax)으로 확장시키고자 한다. 여기서 ‘난독증’이란 기존의 악보체계에 대한 거부감을 담고 있는 것과 동시에 보다 근원적인 리듬감을 표현할 수 있는 새로운 기호체계에 대한 탐구를 암시하는 중의적인 표현으로 해석될 수 있다. 가령 ‘보기 쉬운 악보’에서 작가는 오선지 악보가 아닌 드럼을 구성하는 북이나 심벌이 내는 소리를 한글 음으로 표현하여 악보를 만들고 그 악보에 따라서 직접 연주할 것을 제시한다. 이는 오선지 악보보다 더 보기 쉽다는 장점만을 담고 있는 것이 아니다. 작가는 이 작품에서 단순한 기호가 아닌 음의 표기 자체와 음을 대응시키고자 하는 시도하고 있다. ‘칫’, ‘쿵’, ‘따’와 같은 기호는 실제 소리와 맞물림으로써 추상적인 기호가 아닌 우리에게 떠오르는 직접적인 심상을 나타내는 구체화된 이미지 기호이다.다소 익살스럽게 느껴지는 ‘Headbanging Machine’이나 ‘오른 다리의 언어’ 등과 같은 작품 역시 타악기의 리듬이 주는 직접적인 감정의 전달력을 시각적으로 잘 표현하고 있다. 가령 ‘Headbnaging machine’은 킥 드럼(베이스 드럼)의 페달에 달린 채 부분이 사람의 얼굴로 이루어져있는데, 페달을 밟을 때마다 채가 아닌 사람의 이마가 북에 닿음으로써 어떤 감정적인 충격을 유발한다. 이는 리듬감이 몸에 대한 충격이나 동요에 의해서 느껴짐을 시각적으로 잘 드러내는 것이다.얼핏 김창언의 작업은 작가의 음악적 관심과 회화를 외적으로 결합시키려는 시도로 읽을 수 있다. 하지만 이는 작가의 작업에 대한 매우 피상적인 이해일 뿐이다. ‘난독증’이라는 테마를 둘러싼 그의 작업은 회화가 읽기 위한 대상이 아닌 몸으로 지각하는 이미지 기호라는 사실을 분명하게 깨닫게 한다.

Drawing anew a world that communicates through rhythm

(Park, Young Wook graduated from the dept. of philosophy at Korea University and was awarded the Ph.D by the graduate school of the same university. He originally begun his study of philosophy because of his interest in social philosophy but expanded his field of interest to include culture and art after his graduation. He researches popular music and art history, particularly modern art and art medium as well as lecturing on architecture design. Bach strived to divide a single octave into 12 exact parts and create identical interval between the neighboring notes. Due to Bach's invention called equal temperament, it became possible to provide perfect modulation for any melody. Also, once a composer record his musical motif onto a musical score, it became possible for the performer to simply read the musical score and recreate the note exactly as the composer intended it in his mind. This therefore signifies the absolute authority of the musical score in music. This is because any note that cannot be expressed onto a musical score could not be regarded as a musical note, just as every sound cannot be all regarded as language. However, such absolute authority of musical score, on one hand, also signifies the violent expulsion as noise of countless number of notes that cannot be expressed onto a musical paper.Viewed from this context, dyslexia is a virtue. The only reason early Black musicians were able to develop improvision performance free of restriction by a musical score was because they weren't able to read the score on the musical paper. Just as we can only experience the rich images of matter only when we accept it for what it is rather than as mere verbal expression, so the sounds of the world can only become a sound phenomenon that stimulates our emotion when they are approached not as signs written on a musical score but as an image. From this perspective, Kim, Chang Urn's "Dyslexia" is an heartfelt rebellion that seeks to overcome the world of language and communicate with the world. The "Dyslexia" of the author does not symbolize a rupture from the world but rather a new form of communication.Dyslexia is a fruit of the author's personal experience. As can be seen from his own admission, the author had the experience of performing the drum for years without being able to read the musical score. For him, music was not something to be read. Rather it was something that needed to be felt and released with the body. Thus, the inability to read the music score was but natural. However, concurrently, the condition of dyslexia also forced him against a wall of advanced technique or mechanical preciseness. This may be a personal paradox but it may also be an expression of the paradox that is inherent in art.This paradox becomes clearly evident from the fact that the drum, as a rhythm musical instrument, has a quality that makes it incompatible with the traditional musical score. The drum, comprised of several drums (kick drum, snare, tam-tam etc) and cymbals (high-hat, rider, china cymbal etc), is an even musical instrument without pitch so that it can only express differences in intensity. However, paradoxically, the musical score of the drum is expressed on a score that is designed specifically for recording pitch. To record percussion instruments without pitch in the pitch format is a paradox. The percussion instrument creates a rhythm that must be felt with the whole body. Therefore, dyslexia towards the drum musical score may perhaps be a natural response towards exposing this paradox.At this point, many people may ask the following question; "Why would an artist be so obsessed with music, and with rhythm in particular?" The may be a natural question but this very question is a key to understanding the author's work. The question can be changed to the following supposition; "can it be that the reason an artist is obsessed with a musical phenomenon is because that is the basis of both music and painting?" If the rhythm is a musical phenomenon without any relevance to painting, then the author's interest will remain as another personal curiosity. However, the obsession towards rhythm by the author is based not on mere curiosity or personal preference but derive as part of a fundamental research into painting.The beginning of music is not melody or harmony. Music begins from rhythm. The sound of raindrop does not have any distinct melody. Harmony is even more unthinkable. If the sound of raindrop casually grazing past suddenly sounds like music to our ear, it is because of the rhythm of the raindrop. The moment the intensity of each raindrop stimulates our ear in the form of a pattern, it becomes music. This pattern is none other than rhythm. It is because of this rhythm pattern that the sound of raindrop stop being mere noise but music that moves our mind. However, the existing musical score can only express the melody and harmony using tune and varying length of notes and cannot express rhythm. The stronger the authority of musical score, the greater the regression of rhythm.Rhythm is both the vitality and dynamics of sound. According to Rosalynn Krause, the rhythm is not just a musical phenomenon but a most basic element that displays its dynamics even in painting. Rhythm can be describes as a form of intensity and beat. In painting, it is this very rhythm of the image that raises its dynamics and vitality. Instead of simple contrast of complementary colors or horizontal versus vertical, the flow of strong versus weak beat and rhythmical sense is what makes our heart beat faster. In short, such a beat in painting is the basic vitality that moves our pulse.The exploration by an author is consistently that of creating the basic vitality of painting, in other words, the search for the image symbols that causes rhythm. Prior to the present efforts revolving around the theme of "Dyslexia," from 2000 onwards, the present author was collecting and giving expression to the symbols of the world that would create rhythm. For instance, extracting rhythmic symbols from shelves randomly stacked with objects or extracting symbols from daily objects such as auto muffler, tools, armored knights etc. are aspects of his consistent effort. All objects of the world or visual phenomenons have a certain rhythm to it prior to language. The author call the basic form that endow the object with life "morpheme" and such morphemes have a connection to musical rhythm. Works prior to the "Dyslexia Series" such as "Image Block," "Visual Dialect" and "Language of the Market" are a process of exploring these morphemes.The present "Morpheme Series" reveals that the series of author's journey to discover the vitality of image has entered into yet another phase. In this series, he is going beyond discovering the morphemes of objects existing in the world to expanding them into syntax. Hence forth, "Dyslexia" carry a rejection of established musical system while concurrently it can be interpreted as medium expression suggesting an exploration of a new symbolic system. For instance, in the "Simple Musical Score," the author rejects the traditional musical score in favor of a score that expresses drum or cymbal in Hangul note and suggests we personally perform according to the music score. Its advantage goes beyond being easier to read than the traditional music score. In this piece, the author is attempting to transcribe the musical note not merely as symbols but create a correspond between the transcription and the notes themselves. Symbols such as "Chic," "Kung," "Ta," interlock with actual sound to create a concrete, rather than abstract, image symbols that creates direct imagery in our mind.The rather comic pieces such as "Headbanging Machine" or "Language of the Right Leg" likewise are good visual expressions of direct feelings of percussion rhythm. For instance, the "Headbanging Machine" is partly made up of a kick drum attached to a pedal and partly a face of a man so that each step on the pedal causes the forehead to beat on the drum, creating a certain emotional shock. This is a good visual expression of shock or agitation caused by the rhythm on the body. On casual observation, the work of Kim, Chang Urn can be understood as an attempt to link musical interest with painting. However, this is only a superficial understanding of this author's work. His work surrounding the theme "Dyslexia," makes it abundantly clear that painting is not a subject for reading but an image symbol that must be sensed with the body.

기호정보 혼동의 취약성

난독증(Dyslexia)을 읽기, 쓰기의 학습장애를 일컫는 의미의 단어로 이해한다면 당신은 아직 난독증을 난독하고 있는 것이다. 난독증은 뇌나 신경손상의 결과가 아니며, 뇌, 내이, 안구의 기형에 의한 것도 아니다. 난독증은 생각의 결과물이고 혼란감에 대한 독특한 반응방식의 결과물이다.어린이는 성장과정에서 뇌의 기능이 음성과 활자 등의 언어자극으로 가득차 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 난독증을 가진 어린이에게서는 시각적 상징들(Visual Symbol)에 대한 지각의 왜곡과 혼동으로 지적인 능력(가령 IQ같은)과는 무관하게 문자학습(Academic Learning)이 매우 곤란해진다는 사실은 주목할 만한 대목이다.취학 전 아동들 중 난독증을 겪는 경우로 ‘홍’을 한 개의 음소가 아닌 형태소 ‘ㅎ' 이 아래위로 겹쳐져 있는 것으로 인지하는 경우나 비슷한 모양의 알파벳인 b와 d를 혼동하여 적는 경우 등 공식적 언어에 대한 학습이 어려운 사례를 드물게 볼 수 있다.그러나 역설적이게도 외부환경의 지각과 왜곡은 외부환경에 대한 상상력이 그만큼 활발하게 작동하고 있다는 창의성의 반증이 아닐까?아래에 난독인이 가진 기본적인 능력을 열거해 본다

2. 주변을 매우 잘 인식한다.

3. 평균이상으로 호기심이 많다.

4. 언어보다는 주로 그림으로 생각한다.

6. 모든 감각을 사용해서 다면적으로 느끼고 생각한다.

7. 생각을 실제처럼 여길 수 있다.

8. 생생한 상상력을 가지고 있다

기호라는 것은 이미 알려진 무엇인가를 나타내는 것이라거나 ‘무엇인가를 대신해서 존재하는 무엇’이라는 교과서적인 정의를 내리기 이전에, ‘의미’라고 하는 그때그때마다 새로운 관계성의 사건을 만들어낸 후 사라지는 끊임없는 생성운동이다.기호나 의미가 안정되고 자명해진 시간과 공간속에서 사물과 정보를 주고받는 것으로 길들여지는 것이 바로 언어를 터득하는 것이다.인간은 두 가지 다른 방법, 즉 언어적 개념화와 비언어적 개념화로 생각한다.이는 공식적 기호체계인 언어를 배울 때도 마찬가지이다.언어적 개념화(Verbal Conceptualization)란 언어의 소리를 통해 생각한다는 것을 뜻하며, 비언어적 개념화(Nonverbal Conceptualization)란 생각의 정신적 그림을 통해 생각한다는 뜻이다. 언어적 사고는 시간 순서적이며, 비언어적 사고는 진화적(Evolutionary)이다. 생각의 그림을 통한 비언어적 사고는 그 과정에서 가지가 붙어 갈수록 커진다.사람들은 언어적 또는 비언어적 방식으로 생각한다. 난독인은 언어를 배울 때 비언어적 사고가 특화되는 경향이 있다. 언어를 배운다는 것은 외부의 사물을 인지한다는 것과도 같은데, 이때 난독인들은 언어의 탐지를 자신의 감각으로 이동시킴으로서 더욱 다양한 관점을 가지게 된다. 예를 들어, 글을 읽을 때 새로 만나는 단어들의 의미는 난독인들의 탁월한 시각적 상상력으로 인해 그 단어에 해당하는 그림(이미지)을 계속 추가해 나가기 때문에 오히려 단어 해석의 어려움을 겪게 되는 것이다.언어체계를 이해하는 데 난독인의 비언어적 사고는 걸림돌이지만 나는 오히려 이미지들의 권력을 강화시키는 재능과도 같은 이 현상을 역설적으로 구사해 보게 되었다.비언어적 작업의 전개로서 2000년부터 시작한 ‘형태소’산출과 조합에 관한 작업들을 들 수 있다.Image Block, Blocking, 시각적 방언과 시장의 언어 시리즈 들은 스펙터클로서의 외부환경으로부터 ‘형태소’(사물의 특징을 언어로 설명할 수 있겠으나 그 특징을 이미지로 전달할 수 도 있다는 차원에서 비언어적이며, 이 비언어적 차원에서 산출된 형태들을 나중에 개인적인 구문론의 차원에서 다룰 것이라는 작품제작의 전략적 입장에서 소위 언어에서 말하는 형태소 개념과 중의적이라는 점을 강조하기 위해 ‘형태소’ 라는 단어를 그대로 차용하였다.) 를 찾아내는 일련의 작업들로 시지각과 청각의 인지능력을 통해 생성 혹은 발견되는 이미지들을 모아놓은 형태들의 브리콜라쥬 들이다.이 형태들은 가령 오브제들과 같은 외부환경의 상징이며, 구문론에서 적용되어질 체계를 위한 분절이미지이기도 하다. 상징으로서의 형태소를 생성해내는 원리와 과정을 보여주는 ‘How to make a sign?’(작품명) 은 이 난립적 상징들을 생산해 내는 7가지의 원리들을 마치 공산품의 설명서처럼 다이어그램으로 서술하고 있다.그 원리들은 아래와 같다.

1. 운동의 궤적

2. 소리의 길이

3. 공간의 경계

4. 오브제의 해체적 형태

5. 선택적 관찰

6. 연상되는 적대 관계의 이미지

7. 영화나 소설의 줄거리의 축약

산출된 형태소들이나 생산의 원리는 사물과 현상을 감각으로 파지해 낸 다층적 형태와 과정들로 각 사물과 현상을 표상하는 지각된 개념의 설계이미지이다. 이 개념적 이미지는 이후에 구문론을 이룰 단위 이므로 조합의 편의성을 고려해 하드 에지(Hard Edge)로 그려 냈다.하드에지는 형태소 생성의 과정이 명확하고 견고했음을 드러내주는 알맞은 그리기 방식이다. 산출된 난수표적 상징들의 가치는 대량생산과 소비가 맞물린 현대의 생활에서 사물이 존재하는 방식처럼 실체로서가 아니라 상표, 로고, 라벨을 붙이고 광고와 미디어를 매개로, 우리 일상생활의 다양한 의미의 가치를 대신하고 있는 도시적 욕망의 픽토그램인 것이다. 이제 이 상징들은 그 수량이 방대해져, 일련의 번호값이 메겨진 단위화된 벡터 데이터 파일로서도 존재한다.

즉흥적 리듬, 방언의 구축

나는 주름 진 사물들을 손 끝로 만질 때 나는 촉감적 사운드나, 시각장애인용 보도 블럭길을 여행용 가방을 끌고 다닐 때의 마찰음과 거기서 들리는 박절감의 패턴, 왁자지껄한 인파속에서 들려오는 지역 사투리의 높낮이, 물건을 팔기 위해 박수를 치며 물건 값을 반복하는 시장상인의 외침에서 갖가지 소리들을 들으면서 또 소리를 걸러 지각해내는 리듬의 집착이 있다.게다가 나는 악보의 기보법을 모른 체(지금도 그렇지만) 1999년부터 수년간 교회에서 드럼반주를 한 적이 있는데, 이 시기는 내가 형태소에 집중하기 시작한 시기와도 같다. 이 때부터 내재된 리듬감의 현상을 형태소와 더불어 이미지화 해보는 것에 천착하게 되었다.형태소는 결과적으로 이미지이므로 시각의 산물이지만, 의미적으로 나에게 내재된 소리와 리듬에 대한 감각을 상징하고 있기도 하다.가령 ‘뉘앙스’(작품명임-Nuance)는 이태리산 조립식 선반에 정면으로 진열된 박스들을 그린 것이다. 박스에 븥여진 테이프의 길이는 테이프가 박스에 붙여질 때 나는 찌~익 하는 소음의 장단을 그린 것이다. 즉 이 작품에서 특징적으로 그려진 테이프는 박자에 대한 심리적 시간 표상으로서의 형태소인 것이다. 붙여진 테이프의 길이와 겹쳐진 방향의 형태는 과거의 테이프 붙이기를 실행했던 사람의 행위로서의 움직임을 떠올리게 되며 더불어 당시의 소음을 시각화한 것이기도 하다. 종합적으로 보면 이태리산 조립식 선반은 테이프의 소음값 들을 기록해 놓은 오선지의 체계와도 같은 것이고, 조립식 선반에 놓여진 상자들의 풍경은 음악적 상징들의 대체물이다.드럼치기는 내재된 리듬감을 사지분할의 행위로 연주하는 것이다. 나의 경우는 악보 난독증을 겪고 있으므로 악보를 보고 연주한다기 보다 수집하고 기억된 주변의 소음들로부터 편집되거나 패턴화된 리듬감을 그때그때 추출해 표출해 낸다고 하는 것이 옳을 것이다. 이러다보니 나의 연주는 매우 즉흥적이며, 똑같은 연주를 반복할 수 가 없게 된다. 특히 합주는 개개인이 공식적 언어인 악보체계를 습득한 가운데서 총화를 찾는 것이라 할 때 나의 연주는 매 순간 떠오르는 리듬감을 발산하는 재즈에 가깝다.즉흥의 퍼포먼스를 기록하기 위해 2000년 크기가 다른 5개의 캔버스를 용접해 붙여 만든 캔버스 드럼을 연주하는 헤프닝으로 시연되었다. 그 결과 캔버스를 두드린 드로잉의 흔적들이 추상적인 드로잉으로 남게 되었다.이후 즉흥적으로 내재하는 리듬감을 소통가능한 통사적 구조로 표현하기 시작한 것이 현재 작업에 까지 이르고 있으며, 다음에서 소개될 일련의 작업들은 ‘혼재된 뇌반구 우세’라는 근래의 난독증의 정의와 관련시켜볼 때, 난립된 이미지들을 내적 질서를 통해 재편하기위한 구문론의 출현을 암시하는 것이다.

미디어와 구문론의 소통

나의 형태소로 나의 리듬감을 기록할 시스템은 어떻게 만들어질까? 음악이론의 문맹으로서 북치기박치기 같은 랩퍼들이 입으로 내는 드럼비트들을 그림으로 그려낼 수는 없을까?2008년의 개인전 시장의 언어+당신의 리듬감은 언어학인가?(the Language of a Market+Is Your Sense of Rhythm Linguistics?)展에서 형태소의 이미지들을 구문론으로 적용하기 시작한 작품들을 제작하였고, 기호현상을 리듬에서 생각하는 것, 그것이 바로 구조를 재고하기 위한 하나의 실마리를 부여해 줄지도 모른다는 관점에서 시작한 일련의 작업들은 본 난독증(Dyslexia)展에서 심화되었다.‘보기 쉬운 악보’(the Musical score easy to see)는 드럼의 각 파트(북과 심벌즈)를 칠 때 나는 한글 소리값(이 사운드의 소리 값은 개개인이 틀리게 인지한다.)들을 한 박을 정의하는 정사각형의 단위면적에 그려 이어 나가는 논리로 제작되었다. 정사각형 단위면적의 반 칸에 기울어진 형태로 그려진 소리값은 당연히 반박을 지시한다.이 작품은 어떤 소리에 대응되는 한글의 소리 값을 이미지 자체로 받아들여 나의 형태소의 영역 안으로 끌어 들어왔다는데 의의가 있다. 즉 표면상으로 그려진 이미지는 한글의 나열이겠으나 이 역시 한글이라는 언어로서의 형태소를 의미가 아닌 언어 꼴의 이미지로 치환했다는 차원에서 난독증의 증상을 그대로 드러내 놓고 있는 것이다. 본 작품은 내재하는 리듬감을 한글 소리 값의 꼴의 이미지를 가차하여 그 순열을 그려냈으나, 관람자들은 그것을 소리의 리듬으로 봐내지 않고 표면상에서 글꼴이 겹치거나 분절되면서 보여지는 시각적 패턴의 리듬감에 더 매료되기도 하였다. 즉 관람자들로 하여금 청각적 소리의 번안을 이미지의 리듬형태로 지각하게 하여 난독증의 증상은 누구에게나 있으며, 그 증상을 전염시키는 효과를 가져왔다.나의 영역으로 들어온 형태소로서의 소리값은 기울기와 겹침을 달리하여 한 박자와 반 박자, 동시음과 셋잇단음표 등을 지시한다.‘보기쉬운 악보’(the Musical score easy to see)와 관련된 작품 '메뉴얼‘(Manual)은 마치 한글 소리값을 드럼렉에 장착한 드럼셋트가 실제로 존재함을 가정하고 그 드럼셋트를 조립하는 설명서를 그린 회화작품으로 전시장에서 실제 전자드럼과 ’보기쉬운 악보‘(the Musical score easy to see)와의 병치를 통해 작품 간의 개념적 유기성을 보여주었다.사물로부터 얻어진 형태소들과 한글의 소리값의 이미지를 가차(假借)한 형태소들은 벡터 이미지로 존재하며 키넥팅 설치작품인 ‘헤드뱅잉 머신’(Head-banging Machine)과 ‘오른다리의 언어’(Language of the Right Leg)를 작동시키는 데이터들로 변모 되었다.‘헤드뱅잉 머신(Head-banging Machine)’과 ‘오른다리의 언어’(Language of the Right Leg)는 우리가 일상에서 신나는 노래를 들을 때 박자에 맞추어 고개를 흔들거나 발을 구르는 행위를 나의 머리와 오른다리를 대신한 더미(Dummy)들이 표현해내고 있는 작품이다. 박자에 맞추어 고개를 흔들거나 베이스 드럼 페달이 움직이는 운동의 궤적은 각도를 표상하는 부채꼴의 형태소로 치환해 볼 수 있다. 즉, 외부의 주변에서 파지된 사물과 현상의 인지 이미지인 형태소는 공식적 악보체계에서 쓰이는 음표들보다 외부환경과의 형태적 즉물성을 띄고 있는 데이터이다.부채꼴의 형태소는 ‘헤드뱅잉 머신’(Head-banging Machine)과 오른다리의 언어(Language of the Right Leg)를 작동시키기 위해 고안된 프로그램 See Sonic v 1.0의 시간그리드 상에서 연주(즉 작동)의 타이밍을 표시한다. 실시간의 커서가 부채꼴 데이터 위를 지나갈 때, 마네킹 머리와 더미(Dummy)의 오른 다리가 움직여 드럼의 각 파트를 연주하는 원리이다.형태소들이 통사적으로 운용되기 위한 장으로서의 See Sonic v 1.0의 시간 그리드는 비언어인 형태소가 나에게 내재된 리듬감을 따라 편재될 의미망이다. 시간 그리드는 초당 한 칸에서 네 칸의 간격까지로 구획될 수 있다. 이 시간 그리드 위에 즉물성을 띤 형태소 데이터들이 비로소 나의 리듬감에 맞추어 편재되는 것이다. 시간 그리드 상에서 베이스 드럼의 페달 가격(hit)을 지시하는 부채꼴 형태소는 리듬의 간격, 즉 시간의 장단에 따라 수평이동을 하면서 마우스 클릭을 통해 생성될 자리가 지정된다.빠른 연주를 지정하기 위해 부채꼴 형태소는 수평적으로 겹쳐지는데, 이 때 시간 그리드 상에서 형태소의 겹침의 분화를 목격하게 되며, 이들은 이차적 형태소가 되어 1/2박, 2/3박, 3/2박이 어떻게 시각화 되는지 설명해 주게 된다. 이 과정은 분화된 이차적 형태소가 박자의 기호로 환원되는 피드백으로 상징을 만들고 활용하는 과정에 해당하는 것이다.이 외에도 See Sonic v 1.0에서 연주의 타이밍을 지시하는 또 다른 상징으로 베이스 드럼을 치는 발의 모양, 드럼의 한글 소리 값, 연주할 드럼통의 지름 길이를 나타내는 숫자 등 드럼치기를 연상하는-주변적 환경과 행위에서 인지되어 작도된-형태소들은 서로 겹쳐서 실시간으로 동시음을 표상하며, 겹침이 만들어내는 공시적 이미지를 소리와 함께 보게 되는 것이다.즉, 프로그램과 움직이는 설치 작품 간에 물리적 통신을 통해 시간 그리드상의 형태소 조합이 의미망으로 전달되며, 그 의미망은 시각과 청각의 감각을 공유하는 언어로서 실용가능하다는 것을 보여주고 있는데, 은유하자면 인간의 신체에서 의미망의 컨트롤러인 뇌가 말초의 구조인 양 손, 양 팔의 움직임을 관장할 때, 신경관을 통해 넘나드는 움직임의 정보단위가 바로 이미지로서의 형태소라고 보는 것이다. 소통가능성의 측면에서 이미지가 가지는 맹점은 위의 작품들을 통해 다시 한 번 강조하는 것이기도 하지만, 그 영역이 확장되어 지려면 소리를 인지하는 청각과 공간속에서 진행되는 시간에 관한 감각 등이 더 기민해 져야 된다는 점도 주지해야 하기 때문에 리듬이 중요해 지는 것이다.요컨대 신체의 움직임과 관련된 정보가 이미지라는 가설은 난독인의 비언어적 사유와 연계되며, 나에게 내재된 리듬감을 몸의 감각기관으로 파지된 형태의 이미지로 그려낼 때 사지의 행위를 관장하는 방언적 구문론이 탄생할 수 있다는 것이 본 전시의 주요 맥락이다.소통은 미디어를 매개로 한다. 미디어 유저들 간의 약속이 언어이며, 난독인들은 그 약속에 상상력이 더해져 약속 이상의 것을 바라볼 뿐이다. 그래서 그 약속이 늦춰지는 것이고 이 런 연유로 난독인들은 미디어를 다루는 것이 더뎌지기도 하지만, 그것은 자신의 미디어 사용법을 새로 또 다르게 만들어 나가고 있기 때문이기도 하다. 이런 점이 난독인이 가지는 고독한 차이이며, 다소 외로우나 나는 나의 난독증에 애착을 가진다.

Weakness of confusion in symbol information

If you understand dyslexia as a learning disability in regard to reading and writing, then you are still misreading dyslexia. Dyslexia is not a result of brain or nerve damage nor is it a result of abnormality of the brain, inner ear or the eyeball. Dyslexia is a result of thought and a result of a unique response to a sense of confusion.A child, during his period of growth, is filled with language stimulations such as voice and letters. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that a child with dyslexia suffers from distortion and confusion of perception towards visual symbols so that, irrespective of intellectual faculty (such as IQ), has great difficulty with academic learning.Among pre-school children suffering from dyslexia, there are rare instances where they have difficulty learning the official academic language as can be seen in cases where "Heung (흥)“ is perceived as a double "H (ㅎ)” and where alphabets that are similar such as b and d create confusion.However, paradoxically can the distorted perception of external environment be also a reflection of creativity, that imagination towards external environment is operating actively?The following is a list of basic capabilities of a dyslexia person:

1. They utilize their brain to modify and create things of their perception.

2. They are very perceptive of their surrounding.

3. They have an above average curiosity.

4. They think more in terms of pictures than words.

5. They are very intuitive and perceptive.

6. The feel and think using all their senses.

7. They may confuse their thoughts with reality.

8. They have a vivid imagination.

Symbol of spectacle and preception

Symbol, prior to being the textbook definition as a representation of something that is already known or "a thing that exist in place of something else," is an endless creative movement that variously create a new relationship called "meaning" and then disappear.The way to learn language is to be accustomed to the exchange of material and information within the time and space where symbol and its meaning is stable and obvious.Man think using two different methods, linguistic and non-linguistic conceptualization.This is true also when we are learning the official symbol system called language.Verbal conceptualization signifies thinking through the sound of language and nonverbal conceptualization signifies thinking through mental image. Linguistic thought is lineal while non-linguistic thought is evolutionary. Non-linguistic thinking through mental image increasingly grows bigger because it branches out during its thought process.People think either through the linguistic or non-linguistic method. When people with dyslexia learn the language, they tend specialize in non-linguistic thinking. Learning a language can be equated to the perception of external materials. At this moment, people with dyslexia transfer the detection of language to their own senses and thereby get to possess an even more diverse perspective. Lets take the meaning of new words we encounter when reading for example. People with dyslexia use their abundant imagination to continuously add to the image equivalent to a word and, as a result, they encounter difficulty in interpreting this word. Though non-linguistic way of thinking can be a hinderance to learning the language system, paradoxically, I have made use of this talent-like phenomenon that strengthens the power of the images.Examples of developing non-linguistic work include the production and combination of "morpheme" since the 2000. The series of image block, blocking, visual dialect and market language are a series of efforts to discover "morphemes" (though they can explain the features of a material, they are also non-linguistic in that they can also convey these features though images. In accordance to the artistic stance postulating that the forms produced by this non-linguistic dimension is to be dealt from a dimension of personal syntax, they retain their original term "morpheme" to emphasize their ambiguous nature) and is a bricolage of forms comprising of collected images created or discovered by visual preception and auditory preception.These forms can be symbols of external environment such as objects as well as segmented images that will be applied to syntax. The art work "How to make a sign" that shows the principle and process of creating morphemes as symbols depicts the seven principles of creating these flood of symbols in the form of a diagram akin to that of industrial product manual.These principals are as follows:

1. Trajectory of movement

2. Length of sound

3. Boundary of space

4. Deconstructive shape of object

5. Selective observation

6. Image associated with antithetical relationship

7. Abbreviated summary of movie or novel

The produced morphemes or production principles are multiple forms and processes created when objects and phenomenons are grasped by senses creating a design image that symbolized individual object and phenomenon. Because this conceptual image is a unit that will comprise the syntax later on, it is drawn in hard edge for convenience of association.Hard edge is a fitting method of drawing to show that the creation of morpheme is precise and solid. The value of the random symbols produced exist in the same way matter is found to exist in the daily lives of our modern life, interlinked to mass production and consumption. They exist without substance as trademark, logo, label, using advertisement and media as a vehicle to become a pictogram of urban desire that substitute for various meaning and value of our daily life. Now the number of these symbols has become so great that they exist as measured vector data files with a list of numbers inscribed.

Spontaneous rhythm, establishment of dialect

I have an obsession for listening to all kinds of sound including the friction sound created by running the end of a finger against wrinkled objects, the pattern of harshness created by dragging a travel bag against precast pavers for visually handicapped, sound of high and low pitch sound of dialects heard above the crowd, clapping sound of vendors hawking their wares and filtering the sounds to discover a rhythm.In addition, I have been performing the drum for years in church from 1999 without understanding the musical notation (I still don't) and this period correspond to the same period I started concentrating on the morphemes. From this period onward, I have been inquiring into ways to create images of the rhythm with morphemes.Morphemes consequentially are images and so are products of vision. However, semantically, they are symbols of my sensation of sound and rhythm within me.For instance, the work "Nuance" is a depiction of the boxes arranged frontally on an Italian prefabricated shelf. The length of the tape depicted to be attached to the box correspond to the length of the "Chik" sound made when the tape was attached to the box. In other words, the tape drawn distinctively on this work acts as a morpheme representing the symbol of psychological time towards the beat. The length of the attached tape and the directional form of the tape overlapping recalls the movement involved in the act of attaching the tape and also visualizes the noise involved at that time. On the whole, the Italian prefabricated shelf is similar to a musical score that records the value of the noise made by the tape and the view of the boxes on the shelf are substitute for musical symbols.The beating of the drum is a performance act that dissecting the rhythm into four parts. In may case, I am experiencing dyslexia of musical score so that, rather than performing by reading the score, it will be more accurate to say that I am displaying a random selection of a pattern of rhythm that was collected, memorized and edited from surrounding noise. As a result, my performance is extremely spontaneous and no performance is the same. In particular, if an ensemble is an effort to discover harmony within the formal musical system, my performance is closer to the Jazz that emits a sense of rhythm that comes to mind by the minute.To record the spontaneous performance, in 2000 a trial performance using a canvas drum made out of five canvases of differing sizes welded together were performed as a happening.An abstract drawing of the traces of drum beat on the canvas was the end result.Henceforth, first effort to express spontaneous rhythm in a communicable syntax structure continues to this day. The string of works to be introduced, in connection with recent definition of dyslexia as "mixed hemispheric superiority", suggest the emergence of syntax for reorganizing the mixed images into an inner order.

Media and Syntax communication

How can my create a system to record my rhythm using my morphemes? Can the sound of drumbeats the illiterate rappers make with their mouth be drawn in a painting? Beginning with the exhibition "The Language of a Market +Is Your Sense of Rhythm Linguistics? in 2008, I have begun creating works that apply syntax on morpheme images. To think of symbolic phenomenon in rhythm; I begun a series of work with the thought that this would provide a clue for enhancing structure, a process that was intensified in the Dyslexia exhibition. "The Musical Score Easy to See" was created by using the logic of drawing each beat of individual drums (drum and cymbal) on a square unit area using a Hangul phonetic value (the sound of the phonetic value varies from people to people). The phonetic value drawn on a square unit area in the form of a leaning form naturally calls for a rebuttal.The significance of this work is adopting a sound into a hangul phonetic value and thereby drawing it within my realm of morpheme. In other words, though the visible image on the surface my a list of hangul, it is actually a image transformation of a language morpheme. In this perspective, it is a revelation of dyslexia phenomenon. Though this work provides a borrowed depiction of the inherent rhythm into images of hangul phonetic value, the audience becomes more captivated by the visual pattern rhythm showing letters overlapping or segmentalized rather than as rhythm of sound. In short, by allowing the audience to experience the auditory sound as a form of image rhythm adaptation, it suggests we all have dyslexia and it infects others with the symptoms.The phonetic value of morphemes that enters my domain instructs half-beat, synchronic note and three beat by varying the level of incline and overlapping."The Musical score easy to see" and related work "Manual" presume that drumset equipped with hangul phonetic value actually exists and, using a painting of manual for assembling the drumset to create a juxtaposition with the actual electric drum and "The Musical score easy to see", depicts a conceptual comparison between the works.Morphemes derived from objects and morphemes borrowing hangul phonetic values exist as vector images and is transformed into data for operating the connecting installation work "Head-banging Maching" and "Language of the Right Leg.""Head-banging Maching" and "Language of the Right Leg" are works that express the act of shaking our head and banging our feet as we listen to exciting music in our daily life by means of dummies that substitute for our head and right leg. Shaking our head according to the beat or the trajectory of the drum pedal of the bass drum can be substituted with fan-like morphemes representing the angle. In short, objects grasped from the exterior and morpheme of perception image of phenomenon are a more morphologically realistic data of exterior environment than musical notes on the formal musical score system.Fan-like morpheme represents the See Sonic v 1.o program for activating the "Head-banging Machine" and "Language of the Right Leg" and time-grid performance (realistic) timing. Real-time cursor passing above the fan-like data cause the right leg to move making each part of the drum to perform.The time-grid of See Sonic v 1.0 as stage for operating the morphemes as syntax is a semantic network for distributing non-verbal morphemes according to my imbedded rhythm. Time-grid can be divided in an interval of one to four cell per second. Above this time-grid, realistic morpheme data can be distributed according to my rhythm. On the time-grid, fan-like morpheme directing the hit on the bass drum pedal is designated its place by the interval in the rhythm, in other words, according to the horizontal movement following the beat of time in pace with the mouse click.To designate a fast-pace performance, the fan-like morpheme is horizontally overlapped. At this time, we can observe the division of the overlapping morpheme on the time-grid and these become secondary morphemes, explaining how 1/2, 2/3, 3/2 beats become visualized. This process correspond to the process whereby the divided secondary morphemes is transformedinto feedback symbol of beats and utilized.In addition, there is another symbol of the shape of a leg beating the bass drum directing the performance timing in See v. 1.0; the hangul phonetic value of the drum; numbers representing the diameter of a drum to be performed, etc. Such morphemes perceived and constructed from exterior environment suggestive of drumming, overlap with each other to represents synchronic sound and display synchronic images and sound created by the overlapping.In other words, the combination of morphemes on the time-grid convey a meaning through physical communication between the installation works that move with the program. This meaning display the practicality of a language that share both visual and auditory senses. Touse a metaphor, when the brain as controller of human body controls the movement of the hands and legs, the units of information that move around the nervous system can be seen as morpheme of an image. In an aspect of communication possibility, the weak points of an image, as emphasized in the above works, is that for its domain to expand, the auditory senses and space related time sense need to be sharpened. This is why rhythm becomes so important.In brief, the hypothesis that information related to the movement of the body is an image is linked to the non-verbal reason for dyslexia. Personally, when the rhythm inherent within me is grasped through bodily senses and depicted in image form, it can give birth to dialectic syntax controlling the bodily parts. This is the main context of this exhibition.Communication uses media as its medium. It is a language of promise among users of media and people with dyslexia add imagination to this promise, in order to look for something superior to the promise. Thus, this promise is postponed and it is for this reason that people with dyslexia become tardy in utilizing the media. However, this is because they are reinventing the use of media for something new. This aspect is the lonely distinction for being a dyslexia person. And though it makes me lonely, I have no intention treating my dyslexia condition.

전태련과 부산, 전태련과 블루

우리의 역사책에는 나라의 건국, 패망과 같은 큰 역사가 담겨있다.그러나 그러한 역사가 다가 아니고, 수록되어지지 않아 알지 못하는 작은 역사들 또한 많이있다. 프로젝트 ‘푸른 언덕(靑丘)’은 부산의 교육에 관한 작은 역사를 담고 있다.초점의 대상인 ‘전태련’이라는 인물은 6·25 한국전쟁 때 부산으로 피난한 한 교사이다. 작고하기 전 20여 년간의 부산에서의 행적은 순전히 전후(戰後)세대 교육과 학교건립에 관련된 삶이었다. 본 전시는 전적으로 그의 선각자적 교육정신과 부산에서 보낸 험난하고도 뜻깊었던 일생을 들여다보고자 한다.1912년 함북 명천에서 기독교 집안의 맏아들로 태어난 전태련은 만주 용정일대에서 교육자의 길을 걷기 시작했다. 길주에서 농업학교를 졸업한 전태련은 국어와 농업 등을 지도했는데, 일제하에서 정체성을 잃어가던 우리말을 잊어버리지 않도록 어린 학생들에게 바르게 가르쳐 나갔다. 6·25동란이 발발하자 부산까지 피난하여 보수산에서 가족들과 같이 기거하게 된다.전쟁으로 남하한 피난민들은 주로 용두산, 대청동, 보수동 일대의 중구관내에 약 1만 5천여 세대의 판자촌을 빼곡히 형성하였으며, 구호물자 등으로 하루를 연명해 나갔다. 미군 야전용 식량박스로 얼기설기 역은 배좁은 판자집에서 뛰쳐나온 아이들은 부두에서 품을 팔기도 하고, 노점상이 되기도 하였는데, 전쟁구호물자가 부두를 통해 들어오면서 전해진 영어와, 광복 전 일본인들이 남기고 간 일본말은 뒤섞여서 어디든 가서 살아야 했던 아이들의 입에서 생각 없이 오르내리기도 했던 시절이었다.부산으로 피난을 와서도 곧바로 교직에 몸담았던 전태련은 학교를 오가며 굶주리고, 교육의 기회조차 제대로 갖지 못하는 이웃의 학생들을 수없이 보았다. 황폐화된 국토와 언어, 나라를 위해서도 당장 필요한 것은 교육이었다. 삼삼오오 학교를 가지 못한 아이들이 모여 있는 곳이면 항상 들고 다니던 책을 펼쳐 어디서든 교사가 되었다. 가난한 육체와 정신, 영혼을 살리는 길은 오로지 교육이며, 자신 또한 넉넉지 못한 처지지만 나라와 이웃을 사랑하는 순수한 선각자적 정신은 학교설립을 계획하게 하였다.1950년대 초, 중구(中區) 보수산은 상록수 숲이 무성한 적당한 높이의 푸른 언덕이었으며 1가 32번지는 그가 보기에 학교가 있어야 할 자리였다. 그러한 보수산의 개척은 학교설립과 더불어 전태련으로부터 시작되었다. 전태련은 직접 설립인가 서류를 만들어 화상을 당한 손으로 경상남도청을 다니는가 하면, 학교를 세울 재정을 지원받기위해 전국을 동분서주하여 마침내 1954년 이 푸른언덕위에 청구(靑丘)라는 이름으로 한국전쟁의 기념비적 모습으로 학교가 세워져 개교했다.이상주의자이고 앞선 시각을 가졌던 전태련이 주창한 남녀공학의 교육방식은 남녀평등을 이루는 민주교육의 첩경이라 보고 개교부터 실행했다. 전후(戰後)의 실향민 자제들과 오갈 곳 없는 전쟁고아들을 보다듬었으며, 그들에게 가난을 이기고 힘을 길러 환경을 극복하도록 가르쳤고, 기독교적 사랑과 봉사와 주는 교육을 가르침의 목표로 내세웠다.그러나 평소의 숙명적 꿈이었던 학교개교는 이후로 수많은 시련 속에 내던져졌다. 1959년 9월 15일 사라14호 태풍은 목조로 지어진 12개 교실을 전파시켰다. 가난에 허덕인 학생들은 배움의 자리조차 잃고 말았지만 손수 삽을 든 전태련은 다시 한번 학교 재건의 결의를 다졌다. 국내는 물론이고 해외에 까지도 지원의 손길을 얻으려 설립전의 몇 배에 달하는 노력과 헌신을 바쳐야만 했다. 튼튼한 학교를 다시 짓기 위해 돌을 모으고, 모래와 시멘트를 지원받았다.교사들은 혼연일체가 되었고 직접 모아진 돌들로 교사를 지었다. 1960년에는 마침내 아담한 1층 석조 건물이 지어졌다. 배움의 자리는 다시 안정을 찾았다.1970년 중학교 평준화가 시행되지 까지는 사립학교에 대한 국가적 재정지원이 전혀 없는 실정에도 불구하고 학교는 제 모습을 찾아 발전하기에 이르렀다. 물론 그 뒤에는 전태련의 쉼 없는 노고와 헌신이 깃들어 있었고 나중에는 과로로 지쳐 중병을 얻게 되었다. 1969년 작고하기 두달 전 까지도 병석에서 후학들을 위한 열변을 토하다 4월 6일 부활절의 종소리가 울려 퍼지는 가운데 고단하고도 숭고한 삶을 마감하였다.배움의 터를 만들기 위해 그가 들고 다녔다는 파란서류 보자기는 지금 내 앞에 주어져 있지만, 보자기 안에는 그 시절을 보여주는 사진들만이 가득하다. 그 사진속의 풍경들로 다시 ‘푸른언덕’에 올라서 보고자 한다.‌‌

Our historical books contain important records, such as the foundations of countries or the ruins of countries. However, such critical records do not represent all particulars but we can find so many incidents not attracting the general public’s notice. Project, “Blue Hill [1]” conveys small history related to the education of Busan City.Jun, tae-ryun[2], the hero of this story, evacuated to Busan city for safety while the Korea War and since then, devoted his life to the foundation of schools in Busan for 17-8years. This exhibition intends to light up his educational spirit as a pioneer.In 1912, Mr. Jun was born as the eldest son of a Christian family at Myungcheon, Hambuk and started his way as an educator at Longjing, Manchuria. He took refuge from the Korean War in Busan City and lived at Mt. Bosoo with his family. At that time, he, still a teacher, witnessed the neighboring students, who starved during the War and did not have an opportunity of education. He thought that the foundation of school would be the urgent business for the ruined country. It was because why he realized earlier that school should be the only way for reviving the spirits. He was poor, but nevertheless, the foundation of school was advanced in the pure pioneer spirit of loving his country, his parents and neighbors.Early 1950’s, Mt. Bosoo located at Jung-gu is a blue hill full of evergreens with moderate height and particular he found that the area located 32, 1-ga of the same district is the very place for school. Mr. Jun started to reclaim Mt. Bosoo and at the same, the foundation of school. For founding school at Mt. Bosoo, he took the papers around to Kyongnam provincial office for approval needed to establish school with his hand gotten burn[3] and on the other hand, he was busy himself in searching for the required funds around all parts of the country. As the results of his devotion, he could open a school called to “Cheonggu (means Blue Hill)” in 1954.The initial school established by Jun, tae-ryun having lofty ideals was a school for both sexes, which in recently most of schools employ as a general trend. He cared for wandering young persons and inculcated how to overcome poverty and reconstruct their environment by training their power with Christian service and merciful education as the guide.However, the opening of school, his lifelong dream, had gone through a lot of ordeal. On Sep. 15, 1959, twelve wooden classrooms were completely destroyed by Sara[4], No. 14 typhoon. The students suffered extreme poverty were to loss the base of learning but Mr. Jun made a fresh determination of school reconstruction and lifted up a spade. To raise funds required several times trouble than the before, however, he sought the support of others in the inside and outside of the country. His earnestness gathered stones, sands and cements for reconstructing more firm school. Teachers were united together and piled step by step. In 1960, at last, he could build a trim-story stone building. The base of learning was to recover stability and the scale of school extended gradually.Before the secondary leveling police in 1970, there was no government subsidy but the school made prosperous. Of course, Jun, tae-ryun worked without rest and in the long run, fell illness. Even two months ago when he passed away in 1969, Jun, tae-ryun made an impassioned speech for students on his sickbed and put a period to such tired and lofty life amidst the sound of a bell for Easter Day (Apr. 06) was pealing. A blue wrapping cloth for documents, which he carried for establishing a base for learning, is now placed in front of me but the wrapping cloth is full of photographs evidencing the times. I wish to stand on the “Blue Hill” with the scene in the photographs.

*[1] Cheonggu is a word written in Chinese characters meaning a blue hill, which used as Dongkuk, Haedong, Daedong and the old title of “our country” – this means that there are so many blue hills in Korea.[2] Jun, tae-ryun(1912-1969): born at Agan-myon, Myungcheon-gun, Hamkyungbuk-do in 1912. an educator, poet, philosopher, eloquent orator; after graduated from Jinlin Public Agriculture School, taught at Hoiryeong Public General School, Gando Jungang School, Longjing Public Hong Middle School, Gando Province Public Longjing 2nd High School, etc; Studied at the philosophy department, Literature, Dongyang College at Tokyo, Japan and returned to Korea just before the 1945 Liberation. Lecturer for Pyeongyang Medical College, Professor of Pyeongyang Foreign College: While the Korean War, sough refuge in Busan city. Established Cheonggu Middle.High School (present, Hyekwang High School) in 1954 and took office as the first chief director: He taught the Christian philosophy of practical love & service and the pioneer spirit against poverty and wished to practice the teaching method of Pestalozzi (Pestalozzi, Johann Heinrich)’s round table meaning the equality of sexes.[3] Mt. Yongdoo conflagration: The place of present Yongdoo San Park was crowded with board-framed houses dwelling evacuees against the Korean War. On Dec. 10, 1954, a fire caused by a house spread to the neighboring houses in an instant. 1,093 houses were totally destroyed by the fire and the number of the sufferers reached to over 8,000persons. It called as 2 big conflagration with the fire in the front of Busan Station on Nov. 27, 1953. Jun, tae-ryun got burnt in the hand while he arranged the documents for approval of school establishment.[4] Sara No. 14 typhoon: The typhoon formed on Sep. 15, 1959. The southern area of Korea suffered great damage from Sara lasting four days. Since the history of meteorological observation from 1904, it was one of the strongest typhoons. Damages were 849victims (death/missing) , 373,459 sufferers, 11,704 damaged ships equivalent to 190billion won (basic currency: 1992year Korean currency).

‌자의적 틀 짜기의 공간 - Blocking‌

한 장소에 익숙해지는 데에는 참 많은 시간이 걸린다.내가 쓰던 물건들이 장소를 바꾸었을 뿐인데도 왠지 어색하다.내 물건들도 어색해하고 나도 어색하다. 늘 앉아있던 의자인데도,그 의자가 아닌 것 같다.처음 이 물건들이 나의 것이 되는 데에도 많은 시간이 걸렸는데......그건, 물건과 나의 사이에서만 이루어진 관계가 아니라 그 장소와시간이 함께 이루어낸 관계였나 보다......소통이란 내가 외부의 것을 내 것으로 받아들였을 때,그리고 그것으로부터 내가 받아들여졌을 때 비로소 가능해 지는 것이다.김창언은 외부의 대상이 그의 것이 되기 위해 그와 어우러지는과정과 관계 속에서 발생되는 많은 이미지들을 하나의 공간 안에담아둔다. 그만이 알고 있는 어떤 것의 쓰임새, 습성, 모양, 특성,그만이 알고 있는 어떤 이의 모습 등......타자화(otherness) 된 이미지가아닌 작가에게 스며든, 작가가 선택한, 작가가 반영된 이미지들을 기록한다.그리고 이 이미지들은 그 만의 공간을 형성한다.김창언의 공간은 일정한 틀(regular principle)을 가진 형태소(形態巢)의 조합(blocking)으로 이루어진다.정사각형의 틀 안에 구축된 형태소는 다시 큰 사각의 틀 속에서조합된다. 이 틀은 그가 구획지어놓은 세상의 카테고리(cateory)이다.이 카테고리 속에서 형태소는 존재하는 객체의 표상(表象)으로 본(本, original)객체와 관계없이 동등한 가치를 부여받으며, 하나의 세계를 만들어 간다.

즉, 김창언의 BLOCKING은 물체와 물체, 인간과 인간, 인간과 물체의 관계 속에서각각의 정체성을 인정하며 함께 하나의 새로운 공간을 만들어 가려는 시도인 것이다.형태소들은 독립된 공간과 독자적인 형상을 가지고 있으므로 인해 자유롭다.형태소는 투각(open work)의 형태를 하고 있어서 그 자체의 부피감을 가진다.이 부피감은 지지대와 다른 형태소들과의 관계에서 개개의 독자자인 형상을더욱 두드러지게 한다. 따라서 독립적인 형태소의 조합은 화면에 평면적이면서도함축적인 공간을 형성하는 것이다.유선형, 다각형의..... 어디서 본 듯한, 또는 전혀 새로운 형상들이 높낮이를 이루며어우러지는 모습은 마치 서로서로 이야기를 나누는 듯하기도 하고, 합창을 하고있는 것 같기도 하다.그 어우러짐이 유쾌한 음성으로, 음악으로 울린다.구획된 틀 속에 구성된 김창언의 blocking은 매우 구축적(構築的, construction)이다. 마치 벽돌을 하나하나 쌓아가듯 제작된 작품은 건축의 실재 공정을 보는 듯하다. 그러나 이 건축물은 고정불변의 실체가 아니다. 주체의 변화와 함께 변화하는유동체인 것이다. 따라서 김창언의 blocking은 유동적(流動的)이기도 하다.해체와 변형이 가능한 독립된 조형들의 구성은 변화하는 사회에의 반영이며,변화하는 인간 시각의 반영이다. 이 유동성은 이미 구축된 공간의 파괴가 아니라새로운 공간에 대한 희망이며 가능성인 것이다.
